A go-kart, with go-kart engine and chassis and a fiberglass body, that could be driven on the street. Such a vehicle could have pennants and flashing lights on poles on each of its four corners so that other conventional vehicle drivers could see a street go-kart.

http://www.diygokarts.com Not legal, but would be great fun. There's a video of a guy that races around Canada one night in a tricked out go kart. I can't remember the name, though. Go karts rule. [robertdjung, Oct 28 2006]

Baked I'm sure. Besides, where would you put the airbags? |

Don't let the fact that they're not street legal stop you. |

I'm unclear on the ' why ' part of this idea. Economic? Fun? Novelty? Piss other drivers off? |

How we laughed when Daniel drove his Go-Kart around the sandy corner at top speed and overcorrected his fishtail to the extent that he slammed into the truck. We laughed even harder when we had confirmation he indeed had a broken arm and leg and Go-Kart. |

This would have an added bonus to the daily commute.
Less traffic jams when one of the idiot drivers out there has an accident.
EASY clean-up. Hose off the pavement and wave traffic through. |

Excellent! You just need a dedicated kart highway where laws are waived and medical attention is close-at-hand. See my anno on "go kart track+self storage facility" |

G0-Karts are dangerous on the street because they're too low to be seen by other cars. Besides, if it has 4 wheels, it's a car, and has to have all the car safety equipment. Lose a wheel and it's a motorcycle- so a 3-wheel, enclosed moped is more likely, something like an HMV Freeway? |

BTW I raced Go-Karts in the late 1960s; my fastest LSR attempt was 133.47 mph using a custom-made chassis powered by a pair of modified 250cc scooter engines, each powering a different rear wheel. Unfortunately, mechanical problems (with the BRAKES!!!) delayed the return attempt, so we missed the 1 hour deadline by 35 seconds... |

I survived several mishaps in Go-Karts, including a chassis disintegrating at approximately 85 mph. I was never seriously hurt, but there was a trained emergency medical staff just seconds away at any given moment- waiting for an ambulance after a street collision could have you bleeding on the cold pavement for an hour- not a good scenario. I love Go-Karts, but they don't belong on the street. |
