Removable labels are great when it's necessary to temporarily affix a label to something. When the label is no longer needed, it can be removed with little or no residue. Unfortunately, the only thing a removable label can really fasten is itself. I'd like to see the sheets made with double-sided
adhesive (peel-off layer on each side) so that it could be used for affixing any sort of lightweight object in a non-sliding fashion while providing uniform support and yet could be removed without leaving any residue on the object to be fastened or the thing it's fastened to.
Double-stick tape sort of works, but objects fastened with double-stick tape tend not to stay perfectly flat. Because the sheet would be behind the entire object, it should stay flatter than with double-stick tape.
this does it
http://tools.aubuch...ispenser-970522.asp Not a very good picture here, but I've seen one in person and it really just looks like a strip of foam on the bottom of the dispenser. Works great [luecke, Oct 05 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

What substance adheres to a surface but can be removed without leaving a residue? |
That snotty stuff they use on credit-card letters and magazines leaves little residue. |
That stuff is great. Like adhesive rubber bands. However, something that leaves no residue must necessarily avaoid contact with the items that are to be attached; I propose angled magnets and superconductive paper. |
Isn't that Foolscap dimensions? |
Photo - size would be handy. Except that photos come in all shapes and sizes nowadays. <Sigh>. I just can't keep up. <Shuffles off, mumbling behind teeth>. |

[buddha] 3M was obviously lying to you. They must go through go through barrels of that stuff every day at the Post-it factory. |
Well, I sorta realized after posting that while having removable labels with peel-and-stick backing in that dimension can be handy (allows them to be used with printers/copiers) for the other purposes I had in mind the dimension would be rather arbitrary. |

I've used 11 x 17 sheets of double sided adhesive... not sure how well it can be removed (i didn't want it to come undone) I bought at a large chain craft store here in the U.S. |
Also, //that snotty stuff,// isn't that rubber cement? |
supercat: 3M makes something like this, a double-sided sticky foam plastic, that goes unsticky when you stretch it. But not so big, and it's more intended for heavy objects than light ones.
buddha_pest: I think you'll find the stuff they use on magazine inserts is gow gum (or rubber cement). Stinks of petrol, dries to a rubbery consistency that will peel right off. |
How is this different from rubber cement? Or MMMMMMucilage! This is what they are for. What rubber cement is for, anyway; not sure what mucilage is for, but I like the name, and the funky bottle. MMMMucilage! |
[bud] - it is rubber cement. Pick up a bottle and try it. You can apply cement both to item and surface for extra stickiness. And I think MMMMMMucilage is made of horse bits. |

b_p what *are* you up to? |
Wouldnt photomount spray remain sticky if you sprayed it onto the surface, then immediately covered it with wax paper? |
po: sticking bills, I guess.
bp: as the man says, photomount will remain tacky for quite a while, but it may not be strong enough for your needs. |
If you were supercat, I would suggest Blutac (Uhu Tac in the States, or unbranded poster putty). But I'm guessing you want something more permanent - have you tried foam mounting tape? |
(Oh, and I did take those photos, but my home PC underwent radical brain surgery over the weekend, and I'm still putting it back together.) |
b_p is that right? you are some sorta BillStickers? |
there is an advert here at present that says - Bill Lickers will be prosecuted. |

My goal in this particular case is to hold down pieces to be engraved. I'd like something that holds reasonably well but can be removed cleanly. Tapes that don't cover the whole back can cause difficulties because material being engraved can sometimes flex where it's unsupported. And foam tape is itself compressible. |
Supercat: if you want it for engraving, why don't you use a soft wax? it would conform to the shape of the piece to be engraved, it would hold it in place, it would leave little residue and any that is left could be heated and wiped off. |
