Chess programs can routinely display all the available moves
for a piece.
This idea is about constructing a physical chess board that is
able to do the same, perhaps using magnets or physical levers
to raise and lower sections of the board, so that when a piece
is selected, an actual set of
channels is created
demonstrating possible moves. Ramps maybe needed for
knight moves.

Would multiple boards + robotic arm + software be
considered cheating? |

The board could be underlit; the destination spaces of
each possible move would light up in sequence. |
