Hoberman Spherical Raincoat   (-1)  [vote for, against]
Finally, a use for the Hoberman sphere...

It was a dark and stormy night, (yes, actually I had planned to use that sentence 2 days prior to the thread, thank you, but didn't have the creative energy to finish this), and Raybird Smeele was in his garage, having the time of his life,--his mail-order package had arrived earlier that day, and he was now engrossed in assembling the remaining pieces to the largish plastic ball on the floor. A few more and it would be done. The weather was cooperating nicely, perfect for being anywhere but outside, and outside was exactly where he wanted to go to test his latest ACME fashion statement.

After carefully wrapping the ball in its fully-expanded mode with the provided plastic-wrap, he gave it a test push. The crisp cellophane crinkled stiffly as the ball's outer diameter rods folded neatly together, pulling the cellophane inward. "Nowhere near the advertised packing size," Ray stated, "but probably my bad tape-job. No matter."

He expanded the ball again, unbuttoned the plastic hatch side, set the inner locking rod to keep the sphere's size, and climbed in. He started walking towards the garage door. The cellophane provided a crinkly, distorted view from the inside making navigation a little hard to get used to.

He walked out into the rain, now coming down in sideways-blowing sheets, and smiled as he felt not a drop. But the wind was picking up, threatening to send him rolling.

Wind whips Mr. Smeele into an alley, where he bounces from the hood of a car and ends up wedged between walls 14 feet off the ground.

It's fun to imagine somebody tring to use this from a car. If it were spring-loaded, you could throw it into the air and jump under an already-open hatch. it's be pretty much the same process going out the front door.
