Replicate 3D Environments With Stereoscopic Video

Stereoscopic photography has been around since the early days of photography..Simply take two photos (one taken from a position slightly to the left or to the right of the first image), place them infront of you, cross your eyes and whammo--3D. But what about stereoscopic video?

Some of us remember our Viewmaster Viewers when we were kids -- Same concept, but why not apply this to standard VHS? Perhaps a camcorder with two lenses that records two images, with the left eye on the left side of the screen and the right eye on the right side of the screen..Since its the same as any other video signal, you could give the tape to anyone with a VCR, have them play it back, cross their eyes and see what you saw in 3D.

Would make for some cool vacation videos. :)

Stereoscopic Images (Cross Your Eyes!) http://www.ibiblio.org/propaganda/1.html
Several examples of stereoscopic imagery from Madera Canyon, AZ. When you view them, sit squarely infront of your monitor and cross your eyes slightly--try to focus on the image in the middle. If you're having difficulty, have someone hold their finger exactly halfway between the monitor and your eyes -- focus on their finger, and the image behind it will come into focus in 3D. I built it! Works great, too. http://3dcamcorder.com/3dcam.html
I built one using two fairly good quality Sony camcorders (TRV-900). [lorint, Oct 04 2004]
