Oh yeah, I built a super-sonic potatoe gun as part of a lab demonstration, using pneumatic pressure (~100psi); we called it the "SPUD Missile". When me and my professors shot this, we embedded a potatoe about 3 inches into an oak tree (never did try to explain that to the Physics Chair). Then we thought of shooting a mach1 potatoe missile over some trees and attempted to aim for the lake nearby. By chance, we missed. When we crunched the numbers we figured the spud traveled about a mile and a half before it stopped its ascent. On return, it gathers speed nearing 100mph. Although we were concerned for the unsuspecting freshman dorm on the opposite side of the lake (if we missed), we did not refrain from shooting it. They never did see it coming. :)
