Imagine a laser lawnmore (see others' ideas) that didn't cut through the blade of grass, but just damaged it enough to stop it from growing. True, you'd have brown-tipped grass until the dead bit fell off, but it'd be safer than "normal" laser lawnmowers.
Note: this idea does NOT involve powerful lasers that could burn your toes. The laser is WEAK. and short-focused.
