Not sure agout a category for this one.

Turns out that the image hosting site I chose to host most of the sketches and such I posted to illustrate my earliest ideas has killed my account and every link here is dead.

A couple of my past computers up and died without their data transferring to my next computer, and I've moved many times in the last three years or so. Original copies are... somewhere I've yet to unearth.

ugh

Is there a way to back up an idea-posters' images to a secondary site which isn't going to disappear?
Say ideas with a specific [tag] maybe?

I have no clue if such a thing is even feasible.
I'm just asking... and like totally pissed off that art can be erased so easily.

Thfuckers.

ParachuteSuit, via the Wayback Machine https://web.archive...l&imgAnch=imgAnch17
note you can navigate back to the album inside the archive, although not all files are preserved. [Loris, Oct 24 2020]

Actually, you can just work your way down this list... https://web.archive...lbums/i24/fries-2/*
recognise what they are by url slug. [Loris, Oct 24 2020]

Not Socrates https://quoteinvest.../11/18/great-minds/

Can the wayback machine help with this?

That was my thought too. Nothing is truly lost, except the great Cathedral of Chalesm, of course...
-- hippo, Oct 24 2020

I lost all mine when googlefuck abandoned Picassa. I switched to Tumblr and reposted most of the illustrations and their hb links there. It's a pain but you can do it over a few months.

Halfbakery:Image
or
Halfbakery:Archive
?

Also, what pertinax said. I looked through your ideas until I found an image link, and that resolved in the Wayback machine (link attached). (copy the link URL, go to archive.org, and paste it in the box. Probably all of the capture dates are fine.)

I'd go through your ideas list now, and save the salvaged images to your HD ASAP - and worry about which host to use later.
Realistically, I wouldn't trust any free image hosting service to preserve images indefinitely.

Ha! Thanks. I will do my best to make the time. I was just surprised that, (free or not), if a specific site still exists you'd think their past images would still exist as well.

Bitrot is an evil plague upon the earth.

If that's what it's called then yes, yes it is.
It's funny that the halbakery is like one of the last bastions of what the internet was 'supposed' to be in the first place.

Just reasonably intelligent people discussing anything rationally without all the distractions?

This site rocks.
-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Oct 25 2020

.... brain cells.
-- wjt, Oct 25 2020

//reasonably intelligent// - is this an averaged measurement, across all Halfbakers?
-- hippo, Oct 25 2020

//reasonably intelligent// The lower percentiles in the curve, I suspect.
-- wjt, Oct 25 2020

//reasonably intelligent// Whose rules?! I suspect that HBakers are UNreasonably intelligent to >95% of the average* population.

*value discerned by aggregate of cable television, what are considered blockbuster movies, contents of social media, best sellers on Amazon; see the documentary** 'Idiocracy'.

**Yes, sadly, it appears it was a pre-documentary, although the timeline was a little off.
-- Sgt Teacup, Oct 25 2020

Never rely on the internet for anything important.
If you want to preserve images for a long time, pretty much the best way is an archaic device called a "printer". Computers keep changing (too fast sometimes...) & anything beyond a jpg will be found to be unsupported at the most inconvenient time...
-- neutrinos_shadow, Oct 26 2020

Yes I'm learning that certainly does suck. I can remember needing an eight track adapter to play the first cassette tapes.
People grow weary of endless adaptations and this trend is predicated upon. All new tech, (unless unleashed by accident), is stifled and doled out in the dosages deemed most profitable.

Programmed obsolescence.

//I suspect that HBakers are UNreasonably intelligent to >95% of the average* population.//

Well, we 'do' read stuff that doesn't have pictures.
That eliminates, what 85% or so of the population right there since the death of newsprint... even of those who have full access to unlimited data... and then we think about nudging the envelope just for shits'n'giggles.

I suspect you are right.

Socrates — 'Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.'

<Wonders if asking "Is that why women spend so much time talking to one another about other people ?" is wise/>

<Decides that it is unwise/>

Maybe it just shows that Socrates was a socially disfunctional bore.
-- pocmloc, Nov 06 2020

Or Aspergers ? Brilliant yet tactless, and socially dysfunctional to the point that he got executed ?
-- 8th of 7, Nov 06 2020

A little investigation shows that it's another misattributed quote. There's almost a halfbaked idea there - pretend everything was said by Churchill or Socrates.

I suspect that some women spend so much time talking about other people for exactly the same reason that some men spend so much time hitting other people.
-- spidermother, Nov 06 2020

<Wonders if pointing out that "It's not just 'some' women, it's 'most' women." is wise/>

<Decides that this also is not only unwise, but dangerous/>

//UNreasonably intelligent//

If ya hafta say y'are, ya prolly ain't.

Now let me think, who said that? Was it Socrates or Churchill?
