cigarette brand name nicotine gum   (+2)  [vote for, against]
For the ones who "miss the taste"

What if Lucky Strike made nicotine gum? I'd dig some. I know It'd be better than this "orange flavor" crap I'm chewing now. Since people are so down on smoking Phillip Morris should start selling nicotine gum with the same brand name as the various types of cigarettes they make. Each could taste sorta' like the brand too. Even if they tasted the same as this "orange flavor" crap at least the logos would be cool... it's all marketing anyway.

The downside of chewing tobacco http://www.man-heal...obacco-dangers.html
(Yeah, I know it's tobacco, not gum, but I would still be very suspicious of nicotine gum.) [DrCurry, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 06 2004]

Marlboro selling gummed shoes?

This'd be great - when one kisses a former-smoker loved one they can taste of an ashtray, just like ol' times!
-- Jinbish, Apr 05 2004

If it really is nicotine gum that you're chewing, it will likely be fully as carcinogenic as the cigarettes that you've given up, except now you'll be getting cancer of the cheeks and mouth (not kidding: take a look at the statistics for baseball players). So do yourself a favor, and go out back for a smoke.
-- DrCurry, Apr 05 2004

Listen to you, tough guy Curry. Do you say same about the nicotine gum that's already on the market?
-- yabba do yabba dabba, Apr 05 2004

Mmm mentholated nicotine gum. Newport Chews..
-- Mr Burns, Apr 05 2004

ydyd: um, yes, that's what I was referring to. Nicotine *is* a poison, and it *is* addictive. If you're trying to replicate the quick hit of a cigarette, stick to cigarettes. If you're trying to give up smoking, nicotine gum will only keep you addicted.
-- DrCurry, Apr 05 2004

Oh, I see. And this is what all the baseballers are chewing, huh?
-- yabba do yabba dabba, Apr 05 2004

They're chewing tobacco. (Given that the standard excuse for nicotine gum is that is the high temperature that makes cigarettes carcinogenic, it should give you pause that chewing tobacco is equally carcinogenic.)
-- DrCurry, Apr 05 2004

Chewing tobacco is more carcinogenic than nicotine gum.
-- yabba do yabba dabba, Apr 05 2004

Probably. But I wouldn't hold out hope that nicotine gum is anything like safe.
-- DrCurry, Apr 05 2004

Excellent, from a marketing point of view. Add nicotine patches with the logos of cigarette brands for those who can't chew. - "The nicotine in these patches was manufactured to the same strict standards and made from the same selected tobacco as the CowboyLove sticks you always enjoyed."
-- kbecker, Apr 05 2004

The gum may cause cancer, but I'm a better runner without the smoke. I quit mostly becuse I wanted to stop wrecking my lungs. I wanna run in a ultra some day. (Yeah I know I have to quite the gum too-- but one thing at a time PLEASE!)
-- futurebird, Apr 05 2004

Hey Curry, if you were a smoker you'd know that the hardest part of quitting smoking is not fighting the craves for nicotine. Smokers have to fight those automatic impulses that make them light up a cigarette: after eating, when having beers with friends, when turning the computer on, ... each one of us have our own. If you put something in your mouth that actually tastes like the cigarette you so much want to smoke you forget the need of smoking. After a little while, the former smoker could switch to regular chewing gum.
-- Pericles, Apr 05 2004

Baloney. Quit.

Companies can put products out there for you to carry your nicotine jones for as long as you want. Just stop.
-- waugsqueke, Apr 05 2004

Dang waugsy, you sound like my boyfriend (Only he has a softer way to tell me I'm an addict... I think yours works better though).
-- Pericles, Apr 05 2004

It's not that easy, though.
-- yabba do yabba dabba, Apr 06 2004

Yes it is. I can quit anytime I want!
-- Mr Burns, Apr 06 2004

Nicotine is what leads to vessel constriction and more heart attacks among smokers. But nicotine is not carcinogenic, and does not lead to more mouth cancer as [Curry] asserts. Linked above is a list of carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Nicotine is definitely in the smoke, but is not a carcinogen.

I like this. Good idea. The cig companies spend a lot of time trying to get the flavor of their product correct. Also, I think nicotine really helps some people - it just needs to be available in a safer formulation.

// It's not that easy, though. //

It's only as hard as you make it. It's also as easy as you make it. So make it easy, then do it.
-- waugsqueke, Apr 06 2004

Thanks for that.
-- yabba do yabba dabba, Apr 07 2004

Well it beats the alternative, don'tcha think? Okay then, if you'd prefer, make it hard. Really hard. Go on about how hard it is. Make it difficult. Tell all your friends how hard a time you're having of it. Make it so fucking hard you have to get prescriptions, take classes, read books, get therapy, hypnosis maybe... and even then, it's so damn hard, maybe you still can't do it. It's just too goddamn hard.

Yes, that is much better. At least then you have an excuse.
