chainsaw launcher   (+30, -8)  [vote for, against]
a gun that shoots chainsaws

Ok, it is a launcher that would shoot chainsaws. It would be large and probably on some kind of a tank for combat... And yes, the chainsaws would be turned on.

Understand it's not that I am crazy for weaponry, it just seemed like a good idea, especially when you are in class, bored out of your mind and all you can do is draw funny stick figures getting mangled by an impossible device.

Now If I could get a plausible use for this, in combat for instance, that'd be great. Thanks!

ok[bristilz] i am sorry but i think i revised it. thanks for your input
-- toomer34, Jun 26 2005

I like drawing stick figures also! Mine get mangled with eachother in various uncompromising positions, my favorite is spread eagle. Let's compare sticks sometime.
-- 420FAGtx, Jun 26 2005

I cant spell, I get it. there is no more need to tell me that ok
-- toomer34, Jun 26 2005

This thing would be great for taking down crowds of rioting jugglers.
-- elhigh, Jun 27 2005

Is it just me, or has the signal/noise ratio around here recently taken a distinct dive?
-- TolpuddleSartre, Jun 27 2005

Looks like school's out.
-- angel, Jun 27 2005

I quite like the idea (though it is masked beneath a near impenetrable syntactical murk); I can imagine tall and sturdy Scandinavians arriving at the forest edge and, setting themselves up artilleryly, firing roaring chainsaw after roaring chainsaw into the woods, like a rampaging tennis-ball firing machine cordon OF DEATH.
-- calum, Jun 27 2005

The tail gunner on a huge water carrying airship needs one of these for duelling blimp scenarios.
-- mensmaximus, Jun 27 2005

I kinda like it, in its silliness. [+]
-- contracts, Jun 27 2005

I think for mangling stick figures, shooting hatchets would do.
-- FarmerJohn, Jun 27 2005

[Tolpuddlesartre] yup, markedly so. I'm amazed that school ending can show up so sharply.

Rome is burning!
-- daseva, Jun 27 2005

I've seen convincing arguments that the purpose of a tank is to attack infantry, not other tanks. (The other tanks are trying to prevent it attacking infantry, or something like that.)

Chainsaws would make wicked projectiles against foot soldiers, if any tank ever does go up against troops. Lots of noise, smoke, shrapnel and flames. "And them running and dying!"

This is the revised version?!? What was it like before?
-- baconbrain, Jun 27 2005

psst, [Pa've]. *he's a she!*

Nevermind that, though. TV?! Like, the same one that has Paris Hilton on it all the time? Oh My Gawd!
-- daseva, Jun 27 2005

//I don't think it was a very popular show//
Only among nine-year olds, apparently.
-- angel, Jun 27 2005

I like the idea, but your spelling and grammar are appalling. Also, I have a personal dislike of ideas that include requests. [+-]
-- 5th Earth, Jun 28 2005

[admin: idea renamed. 'chainsaw launcher (revised)' -> 'chainsaw launcher'] We really didn't need to know that in the first place.

awesome

//all you can do is draw funny stick figures getting mangled by an impossible device//

Been there. Done that. Have a bun.
-- DrBob, Jul 09 2005

There is something very pure about this idea. Bread from me!
-- bungston, Jul 09 2005

As I recall, shooting simple chain from a cannon is a time-tested method against both infantry and the rigging of tall ships. Why not up the ante - and save hella buncha money on chainsaws - and load the cannon with chainsaw chain? That way you don't have to keep a lot of premixed fuel laying around near the cannons.
-- elhigh, Jul 11 2005

Chain itself wouldn't be very effective - it was used in smoothbore cannon to join two or more balls which would then tumble and entangle like a bolas.
-- TolpuddleSartre, Jul 11 2005

I have seen actual chain that was fired from smoothbore cannon in the American Civil War, sans balls. I would imagine that fired out of a cannon, anything would be effective. Feathers would be deadly at close range.
-- elhigh, Jul 11 2005

[elhigh] Were the chains actually linked or were they simply individual links, like large shot? I'd guess with linked chains, there is no guarantee that the chain would stretch out to achieve the desired spread.
Any military historians out there? I know both grape (anti-personnel) and chain shot (anti-rigging) were used at sea, but was chain used on land in an anti-personnel rôle?
-- AbsintheWithoutLeave, Jul 11 2005

It was linked chain used during the unCivil War. To be very honest, I'm not 100% it was used against infantry, but I do know it was against rigging.

It would be a fun Mythbusters segment to load up a cannon - maybe a wooden one! - with chain and see what it does in flight.
-- elhigh, Jul 11 2005

Wow I didn't know that people were so averse to spelling and grammar mistakes. I would like to know whether you treated people with conditions like dyslexia and who have difficulty typing accurately as badly as you have [toomer].

And also I apologise for not realising this site is exclusively for adults, as I joined it when I was 17. Maybe you should remove all users who are under 18 for absolutely no good reason at all other than that some of you think their ideas are childish.
-- pooduck, Jul 11 2005

//Wow I didn't know that people were so averse to spelling and grammar mistakes//

Yes you did [pooduck]. You've been here quite long enough to know that many here suffer from grammatico-anal retention disorder and will react in the negative when grammatical or lexical errors to them are presented.
-- wagster, Aug 20 2005

\\grammatico-anal retention disorder\\. Thanks for a good laugh [wags]
-- hidden truths, Aug 20 2005

[wags] OK fine I know now. But at the time I didn't realise everyone was so syntactically and grammatically intolerant of mistakes.
-- pooduck, Aug 20 2005

Might as well just make ginormous shotgun shells for humungous spread and pain.

but i dont know getting hit with the butt of a chainsaw would be preeeetty painful, im guessing of course because believe it or not it's never happened to me
-- seventhinline, Aug 20 2005

elegant and very satisfying. bun for the thought.

the chainsaws would need significant modifications, mostly to eliminate the many 'safety' features on modern saws that would stop the chain the instant the cannon was fired. one would also need to lock the accelerator on - i.e. loading a fully revving saw into the breach..rather you than me. the result of firing a volley of cannon at an enemy position would be spectacular. from their point of view, it would be like a flock of roaring insane killer mopeds decending from the sky. utterly terrifying. chainsaws don't just tear through flesh and bone with ease, they actually bite with the teeth, drawing the guide bar into the object. it is possible now to fit regular saws with long life tungsten carbide tipped chains, as used by emergency services. it will cut through glass, metal, concrete...imagine it on a 1200mm, 121cc, 6.4kW beast, falling towards you at terminal velocity. absolutely mad.

what i really want though (for xmas) is a weapon that fires JCB excavators, or possibly drops them from the sky. remote controlled or driven by cranked-up supermonkeys.
-- rainbow, Dec 24 2005

I'd love to have a chainsaw luncher. I'd load the teeth up in this order;

roast beast tidbit, brie chunk, seedless grape, repeat till chain is full.

vrooommm vroommm!!

chomp chomp chompity chomp.

3 second lunch

Bloody and extremely violent...I like it!

amazing

this idea was so crazy that i thought it would be fishboned and deleted right off but it stayed and people like it

oh ecscuse me my friends have just shot a lamp into the back wall of the school!its freackin asome
-- toomer34, Jan 28 2006

Even better: A cannon that shoots Jaws-of-Life out.
-- DeliveranceRiverBoatCaptain, Jan 28 2006

I want to see a cannon that can shoot anything. Shark cannon; bee swarm cannon; fat man cannon; hundreds of knives cannon; etc.
-- spiritualized, Feb 02 2006

chain s-awesome!
-- benfrost, Feb 02 2006

Big cannons that shoot smaller cannons that shoot...
-- spidermother, Feb 03 2006

21 Quest -the chainsaws would explode of course at random time intervals after impact just to keep the enemy on his toes
-- redsimple, Feb 04 2006

Thinking about it, it wouldn't actually be all that impossible. As rainbow said you'd need specially constructed chainsaws. To make them fit the cannon you'd fit them into sabots. Ideally you'd want the chainsaws to be started by firing - perhaps some sort of parachute with the starter cord attached. Then the chainsaws would descend from the sky like paratroupers, absailing the last few metres before cutting their swathe of death™.

A bun for [skinflaps] illustration. [+]
-- nuclear hobo, Jun 01 2007

I hadn't seen this one before - something like this would have been ideal as an addition to Mek-Quake's arsenal from 2000AD's Nemesis The Warlock - so a great big blood spattered croissant impaled on a chainsaw.
-- zen_tom, Jan 30 2009

My video game skills are getting rusty but this would seem to be the sort of thing best implemented in a video game. I understand there is plenty of fighting with chainsaws but not so much hurling of chainsaws.
-- bungston, Jan 30 2009

I just stumbled upon the illustration in someone else's page on the net. Kudos halfbakery, toomer.

//It would be a fun Mythbusters segment to load up a cannon - maybe a wooden one! - with chain and see what it does in flight.// Linky.
-- spidermother, Oct 27 2009

I think the chainsaws need to spin too. preferably very fast.
