Vehicle: Car: Windshield Wiper
[8th of 7] manually clutched/shifting wipers   (+7, -1)  [vote for, against]
Grind gears and pour water on the wipers

As an automotive option available to those who wish to fully control the functions of sub-mechanisms, after seven levels of pre-release experimental models Tremorless Tools finally offers an add-on kit for any automobile's windshield wipers.

The lever kit (available with various mounting location options, including steering column, center console and floorboard pedal configurations) allows the user to control the left and right motion of the wiper set both as a pair or individually.

The wipers may be driven by either the stock motor, or our available dual transmission set powered by direct linkage off of the engine flywheel.

The clutch set and wiper transmission encourages the driver to display their skills in shifting the blades across the windscreen in the semaphore pattern of their choice, which can be motivated by economy of motion or the desire to create eye pleasing patterns in time with the rainfall.

Like this, but driven from the engine [Twizz, Aug 17 2011]

// powered by direct linkage off of the engine flywheel. //

For those who've always desired enough power to fling their windshield wipers into the next county.

The lab is littered with such items, hence the first seven iterations. A redesign involving hydraulics is in process. The product you receive may not directly resemble the product you ordered.

Question: is there an optional flamethrower upgrade?
-- Alterother, Aug 16 2011

// The product you receive may not directly resemble the product you ordered. //

Have you ever worked for BorgCo ?

Would you like to ?

This is actually possible on Series I and II Land Rovers, although the drive is purely electrical, and on the Series I the passenger-side wiper is an optional extra.

//Series I and II Land Rovers// as well as every ground-up built military truck in the 20th century. 'North of the 49th' at least had pneumatic wipers with a manual handle on each.
-- FlyingToaster, Aug 16 2011

The pneumatic wipers SUCK. I am consumed with rage at the mere mention of them. Using the manual lever in a driving gale is preferable to the hours of infuriation and tears trying to make the thrice-buggered pneumatics work for more than 30 seconds.

[8th], I'll send you my resume at your email and you can decide if BorgCo has a position that I'd be a good match for. I am looking for an opportunity to assist in a startup or some such ground floor endeavor.

The initial prototype was done about 25 years ago when I had to drive home in a driving rainstorm (wait, if you're driving then they're ALL driving rainstorms aren't they?)

The wipers were unresponsive, I had to open both front wing windows (don't you miss them?) and run a string loop between the wipers, in both wings and complete the loop under the rear view mirror.

I steered with the left hand and wipered with the right for about an hour. It was fun.

[Alterother], all the flamethrower upgrade experiments have voided the windshield warranties, so we're not offering that at this time, although it did initially dry the window nicely several times before destroying it.

[+]. Just how hot can you get tempered glass, without having it shatter when water hits it? Would you consider a heated windsheild which vaporizes the rain? No moving parts.

(Plus, in dry weather, it's good for incinerating insects.)

((Pity about the squeegee men, though.))
-- mouseposture, Aug 16 2011

You mean the flame-enveloped giftless extorting scamming window-smearing gits writhing in agony on the pavement, bathed in a generous portion of a specially sticky hydrocarbon blend, their worthless bodies being consumed a bit at a time as their owm body fats liquefy and ignite ?

Do you have some sort of weird problem with that ? We don't.
-- 8th of 7, Aug 16 2011

Why else would I ask for a flamethrower? Should be somewhat effective against teleporting deer, as well.
-- Alterother, Aug 17 2011

Early Landrovers have a seperate motor for each wiper and a manual override. Each wiper is fitted with a lever which is directly coupled to the wiper, enabling manual operation. That lever may be engaged with a drive dog, connecting it to the motor / gearbox. A seperate switch on each motor enables electric operation. There is no interconnection between the two units.

Nearly baked. See link.
-- Twizz, Aug 17 2011

[Alterother], you're never going to give up on that deer thing, are you? For you it's personal.
-- normzone, Aug 17 2011

There must be a solution. The US faces a crisis of epidemic proportions if we don't do something about the teleporting deer problem soon.
-- Alterother, Aug 17 2011

Are those anything like perfectly normal beasts?
-- RayfordSteele, Aug 17 2011

Mm... more like Jackalope.
Don't know how I missed this gem.

This is beautiful in its simplicity. I would consider a Babbage engine to run arbitrarily complex washer patterns, but the idea as-is is better.
-- sninctown, Jan 21 2015

I think they should work with a metronome app that finds the beat on whatever song is being played on the radio and use some sort of electro-mechanical amplification scheme to drive the wiper frequency.

I hate it when my wipers are out of sync with the music. And in the case of independently-powered wipers, I always find myself secretly wishing that the slower wiper would catch up.
-- RayfordSteele, Jan 22 2015

Is there an advantage to this model over existing in-faucet heaters?
