Past instances in which paranoia creeps over the national consciousness go largely ignored. It's a sad thought that largely unfounded widespread public panics like Y2K and other instances, such as Anthrax scare, that were disproven have been stricken from the pages of history.
These idiotic myths need to have their rightful place in history cemented. As a reminder for the future we as a society need to memorialize these instances of public lunacy so they may be prevented should they ever arise again.
Walking into the Memorial you will be greeted by sculptures of panic-stricken people needlessly hoarding supplies and video loops of news footage of supposed "experts" explaining why the world is going to come to an end because of the 'digital clock resetting'.
When you walk past the Y2K wing you will enter the "anthrax" room, where a video of Colin Powell holding a bag of anthrax in front of congress will be looped and projected onto the wall. Beside it will be a tribute to those who suffocated by plastic wrap in their basements in an attempt to 'seal away the anthrax.' The walls will have news reports of the AVA (anthrax vaccine) sales reports (which were high) and a framed report of the 2003 'Anthrax vaccine declared safe and effective' followed by a government issued block on the 'vaccination initiative' a year later.-- Duck Lagrange, Jul 17 2015 Anthrax https://en.wikipedi...ax_Vaccine_Adsorbed [Duck Lagrange, Jul 17 2015] Y2K panic http://time.com/3645828/y2k-look-back/ [Duck Lagrange, Jul 17 2015] Definitely.
There should also be framed newspaper front pages, and video loops of doom-mongering newsreaders.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 17 2015 I was under the impression that the whole Y2K thing never came to be the big event it was feared because so many organizations went out and bought new hardware before it got here. Most of the players I associate with did so.-- normzone, Jul 17 2015 I have to second [normzone]. While it's unlikely that the bug could have launched nukes, the possibility of significant financial and communications disruptions were largely prevented by broad awareness and overworked IT departments.
I'm still more than a little worried about the 2038 problem.-- MechE, Jul 17 2015 Well, it's about half past eight where I am, and no sign of problems yet.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 17 2015 As long as you have a room where everyone rides a bicycle wearing a snow jacket, to attend a global warming lecture given by someone who arrived on a private jet and wearing a t-shirt and shoes with no sox.-- theircompetitor, Jul 18 2015 ^ Al Gore ?-- 8th of 7, Jul 20 2015 A whole section on the Cold War, McCarthyism, and the Dot-Com bubble would seem to be useful.
Could we also have a section on the fiscal policies in play during the entire decade of 2000-2010 caused by overconfident jerks?-- RayfordSteele, Jul 20 2015 random, halfbakery
