Mix it up

Many musicians collaborate, but usually within their genre. The idea here is to spark cross-genre musical collaboration and televise the results.

Get four famous musicians and perhaps a famous music producer, give them a set of songs to choose from. (No songs can be hits by the artists themselves). They are given a day to experiment, and access to some studio musicians to fill in the sound as needed. The next day, tape a concert in front of a live audience.

The producers are now soliciting suggested lineups.

Trading Tunes?

TV backup bands such as "The World's Most Dangerous Band" - since move from NBC known as - "Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra" (NBC weasels wouldn't let 'em keep name) do this 5 nights a week (discounting reruns). The beauty of it is - the TV audience doesn't have to pay. That said, while I'm in favo(u)r of breaking out of the musical cliché molds most musicians have gotten them elves into, I'm afraid many *famous* musicians would command hefty fees for appearances if the suggested idea were to come to pass, what with their precious 48 hours being burned up.

[bliss] Yes, I'm a big Carlos Santana fan....I got this idea while listening to his latest album. [thumb] Maybe the whole thing could be for a charity as incentive?

Watchoo talkin' 'bout Willsqueke? McFerrin's mike could *accidently* be unplugged, Dolby could be stuck in traffic...

George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne....aka the Traveling Wilburys....the best collaboration ever. RIP George and Roy.

I think this is the idea behind "nu-metal" music, but if you ask me metal has no place with hip hop, and I think its a bit gimmicky.

No need to change these lyrics:
It's coming sometime and maybe
I give a wrong time stop a traffic line
Your future dream is a shopping scheme

bristolz's choices would produce only silence. Aren't they all dead? Not much of a concert going on there, methinks.
-- DrBob, Dec 04 2002

Ah, but what glorious silence it would be. It would be a silence deftly produced by George Martin who is still alive and still producing.

And this is a pretend site with pretend ideas and my pretend band would probably turn out some pretty good stuff.

While were on the dead subject, [Marassa]'s choice would be closer to the Traveling Bury's.
-- bristolz, Dec 04 2002

Two of the Wilburys are still alive. Three if you count Bob Dylan.
-- angel, Dec 04 2002

or the Wilbury Trio...which would still be great. don't joke like that angel, God is immortal and can't die.
-- Marassa, Dec 04 2002

We (wife and elf) have Dylan's 30th anniversary concert on video; some of it's rather like what this idea is about. The singer and guitarist from Pearl Jam doing "Masters of War" is one of the highlights.

The thought of Leo Sayer singing with Barry White just makes me chuckle. Put Lesley Garrett and Brian Eno in there, and you've pretty much got a band.
