Wheelie Bin Clapping Music   (+2, -1)  [vote for, against]
neighbourhood rendition of Steve Reich's clapping music

I first heard Steve Reich's Clapping Music in 1982 when I was living in Cork, which at the time was a real backwater town. It was a revelatory experience. For those who don't know it, it's best to listen first or you won't understand this idea.

I propose recreating the Clapping Music in a neighbourhood setting, taking advantage of the fact that most people are confined to home due to corona virus restrictions.

In the original piece 2 people are clapping (link) but I believe two sets of 10 people could achieve an even more immersive variation of the piece whilst still maintaining its simple essence.

What is required is to use the wheelie bin lid's capacity to make a loud banging sound when opened and closed by even a small degree.

A street containing at least 20 properties will be sufficient for ten people on each side to bring their bins to the front of each of their homes then follow the carefully synchronised timing of the piece, using their bin-lids.

Essential social isolation would be maintained as each particant will be a full house width apart.

Synchronised Lawn Mowing; Power Hosing; Leaf Blowing; Hedge Clipping and Letterbox Tapping are all possible extensions to the idea of a neighborhood orchestra dependant on controlled sound repetition.

With due respect to composer/performer maestro Steve Reich.

Brilliant; urban jungle drums. I love this suggestion to bits [xenzag] and feel very privileged to give it its first — albeit belated — bun [+].

How do you think we could work in the effects arising from the speed of sound? it should enable some very immersive spatially-intertwined beats?

It's not going to be very pleasant for [xen] if the roof of her home suddenly starts to get banged up and down without warning ...
