Water Fireworks   (+16, -1)  [vote for, against]
BOOM! WOW! SPLOOSH!

The 4th of July is hot and sunny. But most folks must wait for the sun to go down before the fun fireworks start. I propose that a daytime show could be put on using water. Fountain-based water shows have been baked for millenia, the latest incarnation being the Belagio fountains in Vegas - water can be spectacular.

These waterworks would need to be dropped from high flying planes, since the volumes of water needed would be heavy. They might even be incorporated into an airshow, another 4th of July tradition in the US. Explosions in water make impressive plumes of droplets and mist and would be a daytime substitute for fire and sparks. Properly crafted, all sorts of fountainlike effects could be achieved in midair. If deployed at the proper angle between viewers and sun, the waterworks might also produce rainbow effects. Finally, those standing below would get sprayed as the droplets came to earth - welcome on a hot day.

I must add that part of this show would consist of a flying Apache attack helicopter being doused from above with water, and hurling it in all directions with the blades.

[+] Ooo. If used in conjunction with strobes or something similiar, that would look very pretty.

Didn't I do this already? Oh, yeah, I did. Sorta.

A big helicopter could actually just carry the water onboard and hose it upwards into the blades. Flying in with the sun behind it, this should produce an awesome corona.

I was thinking of this again while at Seaworld. They have powerful spotlights. These plus a spray of mist (which they have lots of there) correclty incorporated could make rainbows on demand during shows, which would be cool.

Judicious chemical choices might be needed.

Happy 4th of July everyone. Thought I'd drudge up [bungston's] old, damp idea to celebrate the day. Whooo- hooo!

Lack of reckless and poorly-considered use of volatile flammables, pyrophoric compounds, finely-powdered microcrystalline alkali metals, hypergolic monopropellants and beer. [-]
