Public: Debate
Venn Diagram Political Debate   (+3)  [vote for, against]
Played almost like a video game, start by filling out your views on various issues.

Then be paired with others that may disagree with you on some subjects, but share common views on others.

I think spirited discussion is a good thing, but it's hampered by tribalism, insults and outright hatred.

This is solely for those who enjoy discussing subjects. Your discussion with somebody starts off with a Venn diagram style outline of the other person's views as the starting point.

One example might be, in a pandemic situation, person A believes that the law should require face masks in public but doesn't believe police should arrest you at your home and lock you up if you're sick. Person B also believes face masks should be required but thinks people should essentially be arrested if they're sick.

The idea is, no time has to be spent on the face mask question and the debate can get right to the point following an outline where person A makes their point, person B makes theirs.

I think the basic philosophy of starting with "Well, let's start with where to we see eye to eye on the subjects before discussing things where we may differ." is a good way to talk about things. This might minimize mindless barking of insults which really is a pointless use of time that drives people apart without really achieving anything.

I always thought, like in theology, the most viscious disagreements were between people who superficially believed the same thing, but could discover some tiny difference of interpretation to blow up into a life-and-death struggle.

The people who genuinely had very different opinions from others could get along fine with no need to debate because each respects that the other will never agree with them but held the opposite view sincerely.

// the most viscious disagreements //

Ah, those would be the thicker ones, shirley ?

// like in theology //

Interestingly, in academic theology, a couple of the world's leading experts on the Bible (both OT and NT) are Muslims. They speak regularly at conferences and seminars involving Jews, Christians and others. Their personal beliefs are considered entirely irrelevant to their academic expertise ...
