Update my attachments   (+3)  [vote for, against]

It often happens that I write an email and want to attach a document I've just been editing. Invariably, I attach the document, then wonder "did I save the latest version of the document before attaching it?". So, I have to un-attach it, go back to the document I was working on, save it, than re- attach what is now the latest version of it.

I'd like a simple option to update the attachments in any mail I'm about the sign. It would simply re-attach the same document, thereby ensuring that it really was the last-saved-version of said document.

[Note - if this idea flops, I reserve the right to modify into a method of dumping all my existing close friends and replacing them with more interesting and topical ones.]

[looks at [Ian Tindale] and wonders why he's pointing. A dwarf appears! You're in a maze of twisty little passages all alike.]

How is this halfbaked, do tell?

Now if it was to be attached to a little washing line by means of a digital clothes peg, this could be developed into something. Older washing would have grubby stains on it to reflect on there being newer edited versions ready for auto-replacing when the message was being sent. Clean laundry would show that the original version was unchanged. There would be options to customise stain and laundry types. ie boke on T'shirt; egg yolk on tie; urine on shirt tail...... etc

This does seem about 4 years out of date, but yes, I'm also a stubborn document emailer.

You might always just send a link around that directs folk to the document?

You'd be surprised at the number of businesses still sending documents as email attachments. This idea seems like an easy addition, and I'm surprised it doesn't already exist. Another variation would be for the email program to recheck when you hit send. If the document has been updated since when it was linked, ask the user if they want to update.
