UV light kills bacteria, does it not?

The problem with dishtowels and sponges is that they can retain food, which breeds germs, and then you're just smearing the bacteria around.

The solution is a series of UV lights installed underneath the higher cabinets. With a flick of a switch, the counters are sterilized. And being attached underneath the cabinets, they are above the counters, but in a place that is easily accessable AND not likely to be disturbed without intent.

From the link, I see that this system works by rendering the organism sterile and thus harmless - what's unclear is how close to the light the organism needs to be to be affected in this way. That distance defines whether this is possible.

Wow I can be fithy and hygenic at the same time. UV sure beats cleaning. Add a household irradiator and the fact that I left those uncooked chicken breasts on the counter for a few days would also not be a problem.
