Imagine the scenario, you're out for a walk in the countryside, without a watch, or any knowledge of how the height of the sun correlates with the time. What you need is a timed flat cap, whereby the peak peaks at, as noon, and then continues to fall until, say midnight. Now, without so much as a thought, a quick glance at your brim will tell you the time.
