Theremin Based White Cane   (+9)  [vote for, against]
Compatible with Grogster's Attachments for His Cane

Rather than having to come into physical contact with the grubby world, this Theremin based cane provides a progressively louder tone as you get closer to an object. Different pitches could help the user differentiate between objects of varying consistencies.

Aids for the visually impaired incorporating proximity detectors and variable audio tone generators are Baked.

I'd suggest pitch for proximity, timbre for texture/consistency and loudness for size.

Heh. I just spent the two coldest days of this year hip-deep in snow looking for water line shut off valves by sound with a metal detecting wand
...and then you post this.

Careful wandering around my head like that, you can get lost in there you know?
