I don't want to go to a tanning salon, and I don't live near a beach. But I do enjoy the luster of a fresh tan just as much as the next man or woman, so why shouldn't my house be capable of multitasking just as much as I do?
With 4 verticaly mounted tanning lamps in the shower, the user will effectively get a perfectly even tan, in virtually no time, since he/she is in there for five/ten minutes anyway. Probably help wake us up a bit too, those things are pretty bright. Anyone got an estimated cost?-- daseva, Jun 11 2004 Multi-Material Tiles - insert a UV tile maybe http://www.halfbake..._20material_20Tiles*warning - shameless plug* [jonthegeologist, Oct 05 2004, last modified Oct 17 2004] Pretty close. http://www.sunquest...uk/en-UK/aurora.htm"It has a high-powered ceiling fan and body cool jet system" so just connect it to the water supply. [angel, Oct 05 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004] Computer Tan http://www.computertan.com/The online tanning service [hippo, Feb 09 2009] I like this one [daseva] although I worry about the old water-electricity combination. Maybe you could have UV tiles (see linky for shameless plug)-- jonthegeologist, Jun 11 2004 [Jon], please elucidate. I like combining these two ideas, but I don't know how to get electricity to the tiles, if they are removable. That is, will there have to be a wiring hole through each of the base tiles, all connecting up behind the shower wall to the main lines? Strikes me as too tedious, but let me know... I was thinking about just covering the lamps with proper insulation and mounting one in each corner.-- daseva, Jun 11 2004 Seems like a good idea, but I did come across something suggesting that tanning machines were more likely to cause skin cancer than regular sunlight.-- DrCurry, Jun 11 2004 Well, I think tanning machines are unhealthy, and overuse leads to people looking pretty weird. But, lots of people use them, and if you don't overdo it it's fine. The shower thing probably wouldn't be all that expensive either. I am not sure what the lamps cost but in principle uv lamps are very similar to fluorescents, so it should be possible to get them at a reasonable price. Anyway croissant, obviously it would have to be suitably water-proofed and grouned.-- brewer, Jun 11 2004 I don't understand the desire to have brown, leathery skin. I live in a country with the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and people are still obsessed with tanning.
Would you want to install a bowling-ball sized hailstone machine in your shower?-- Detly, Jun 12 2004 Detly: that's a wealth thing. A couple of hundred years ago, when everyone worked in the fields, having a pale white skin showed how well off you were. Now, when you need to be rich to lie in the sun all year round, having a brown leathery skin is de rigeur.-- DrCurry, Jun 12 2004 Taking a shower with those dark gogglesthat seems dangerous.-- ldischler, Jun 12 2004 I'm in the camp that sees indoor tanning as a dangerous route to skin cancer and aging, so I'm gonna have to vote against this one. Sorry.-- tchaikovsky, Jun 12 2004 When?-- FarmerJohn, Jun 12 2004 I can't find a link to it, but here in México a "tanning shower" exists, literally. You get butt naked under a small shower that sprays you with some strange chemically-designed tanning water for one minute. And voilá! You're tanned. It fades away within a week or two, but in terms of skin cancer it's risk-free and takes less time than any other tanning process.-- Pericles, Jun 12 2004 do blondes become brunettes?-- po, Jun 12 2004 It just ain't gonna help some people. Freckle enhancement isn't all that appealing to me.-- half, Jun 12 2004 No, po, one must wear a shower cap to use the shower I mentioned. But even if they did become brnettes, a blonde would always be a blonde. They're helpless.-- Pericles, Jun 12 2004 this is a great idea, especially for people in cloudy climates like seattle. they suffer a depression caused by lack of sunlight.
however, it would be terrible on the eyes, ldischler is right. you'd either have to wear goggles, or keep the intensity no brighter than sunlight.
that being said, how about a magnifying sky light that brings the morning sun into the shower stall? you can't beat that natural sunlight!
i also thought this would be a chemical spray, but was pleasantly suprised! croissant!-- changokun, Jun 12 2004 And by the way: welcome to the bakery, daseva.-- krelnik, Jun 14 2004 Ahh... Still want to do this.. lost all my buns!-- daseva, May 26 2005 Was this your first idea? Oh, hell... I'll bun it. I'll bun anything.-- justaguy, May 26 2005 Yeah, I have days where I practice negative critisism, but for the most part, my buns are sluts.-- daseva, May 26 2005 A couple comments... The bulbs for tanning beds are not cheap, around $450 (US) to outfit the bed.
We (US) also have the "spray" tan (called Mystic Tan), although I haven't tried it I was told that you have to avoid taking a shower or being in the rain for 4 hours after use or you get spots!
Lastly... You would need to take 20-25 minute showers to get and retain your nice tan, 5-10 isn't long enough. Sorry to have rambled, just adding my two bits.-- 37PiecesOf Flair, May 26 2005 [daseva] Your buns are sluts ?-- normzone, May 26 2005 [37], Note link. Price of bulbs down to $200.
Looking for this one company that sells entire tanning shower units for like $10,000.-- daseva, May 26 2005 Well, metaphorically speaking.-- daseva, May 28 2005 Fishbone to tanning.
What I would like is a shower that blowdries you afterwards.-- omegatron, May 28 2005 Couldn't resist adding the "Computer Tan" link - excellent stuff.-- hippo, Feb 09 2009 //especially for people in cloudy climates like seattle. they suffer a depression caused by lack of sunlight//[realisation suddenly dawns about Micro$oft]-- coprocephalous, Feb 09 2009 random, halfbakery
