Subway Urinals   (-2)  [vote for, against]
Get rid of that damn smell.

It's a sad fact that in the UK all subways smell of wee. I don't find it completely disgusting, just slightly unpleasant and annoyingly predictable. Nothing we do is ever going to stop people from slashing in them, so why don't we build in little urinals that safely channel away the piss? Then they won't smell.

p.s. I don't do it.

Art with a curious smell. The video is something you shouldn't "miss". [Amos Kito, Sep 26 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004]

In the spirit of "Pretend everything was invented by the French" - I seem to remember that in France they have outdoor urinals (Pissoirs).

Just a simple "hole in the wall" with a U-trap that flushes occasionally. Vandalism might (sadly) be a problem for such a useful public innovation but I shall award a croissant.

This is based on the assumption that the greater proprotion of those who deface our public spaces in this way are male, of course.

What? *Ever*?

They have al fresco pisserias on Old Compton Street, in London's Soho. They look like giant lemon juicer divided into four quadrants, so you can make friends while you go. Very Sohoid.

They also had a 'gentlemen' symbol on the side, which struck me as a total red rag. Lewisgirl?

you calling me a bull?

I have nothing to add other than to explain that I can't possibly comment because I don't do it in public either.

Jeez. Just release a flying version of that Amazonian water-borne parasite that follows streams of urine to their source, then burrows painfully inside. That'll fix 'em all, good and proper.

Lg: I was merely expecting, that as a member of the guerilla wing of womankind, you'd "want to see about that." I don't doubt that you are excellently brought up and hold your alcohol well. (well, we'll see about *that* soon enough). No bull ):o.

[hippo] I can just imagine what a French subway would smell like. Ahhh, fresh roses!
-- Amos Kito, Sep 26 2002

[Amos] Well, yes. In fact the one pissoir I remember using in Paris wasn't in a subway, but was just on the pavement. It comprised a spiral wall about 2' to 5' above the ground supported on metal legs with a trough-style urinal at the centre of the spiral. While I was using it someone came in and started fishing about in the trough, collecting used matches. Very odd.

Subways smell like urine because of all the moisture. The water come up out of the ground and it evaporates. Trust me I know what ground water smells like after it has sat around in a dark area for weeks at a time. Nobody really pisses on the subway. If pissing on the subway was a problem than just put in some freakin bathrooms.
