Strobe light boxing   (+28, -1)  [vote for, against]
duck!

this idea is for boxing to be performed under strobe light conditions...

the arena would be dark, and the over the ring strobe would be programmed to have a random off feature for 1/2 to a second or two so that an opponent might throw a right uppercut ( or equally effective swing ) at the exact moment the strobe cut out, leaving both audience and opponent and aggressor wondering what would happen next. Could make for interesting or comedic counter moves in the ring.

TT in the dark [po, Mar 29 2006]

I wonder if given enough talent and practice could a boxer time all of his illegal below-the-belt punches to occur in synchronicity with the intervals between strobes? Would there be any visual evidence of the fouls?

Actually, lots of sports would be better under strobe lighting. Running for example: If the runner kept in time with the strobe frequency they would appear to remain frozen in a dynamic running pose while moving swiftly along the track.

Or the strobe could be a little out of synchronisation, so that the runner would appear to be in slow motion.

Or running slowly backwards, while moving forwards.

+ this would be pretty cool.... maybe their faces painted in black or white for enhancement.

Silly? I'd call it genius. Much of boxing, as I understand it, is watching for visual cues to what the other boxer is going to do next. Adding a strobe light enhances this further, and adds another level of strategy.

I'm picturing different strobe classes (none, 10hz, 5hz, etc.). For your strobe level you know what to look for with each flash, both what the other boxer is planning and where he is planning it. You can then dodge in some direction that the other boxer is not suspecting, making the blow miss. Of course, knowing this the other boxer will try to time starting their punches just after a flash. Knowing this, you'll be constantly moving right after a flash. Etcetera.

"Where's my telephone?"

"is that you baby?" "yeah."

"got something to tell you." "oh, what?"

I want to see you tonight
I want you to walk in the door

I want you to lay on the floor
Cause tonight's the night

I would say: 'challenging'.

could have sensors in the gloves so the lights only hit when the boxer throws a punch... might be able to see a ref get knocked out... me and my friends used to play a game called "highball"... we would turn a strobe light on and smack a beach ball at each other... its fun getting smacked in the face with a ball that looks like its still in your friends hand..

One nice feature is that if you film it right you could watch the whole boxing match in 10 seconds and not miss a thing.

Yes, with Green Velvet doing the PA commentary and supplying the music.
