Slow light   (+6)  [vote for, against]

There are many computer games out there which seek to mimic real life, or some imagined alternative. For instance, I understand that Grand Theft Automobile aims to simulate life in Manhattan, Super Mario Brothers aims to simulate the life of an Italian plumber, etc.

These simulations have varying degrees of realism, but all of them tend to treat the speed of light as being more or less as it is in the real world (and East Anglia) - viz about 3x10^8m/s.

Proposed, therefore, is an alternative simulated reality, in which the speed of light is about 30mph. Most of the other aspects of the game can be left as they are. The result of this may be interesting (or may not). For instance, you and another player will see events happening in a different order, if you're far enough apart. If you see someone levelling a gun at you from a distant rooftop, there's a good chance that you're already dead. If you're driving towards someone at 20mph, they will appear to be bluer and faster-moving than usual, and so forth.

Optionally, players may be allowed to exceed the 30mph speed of light. Hence, if you're shot and badly injured, but can get in a fast car, you might be able to reverse your injuries (or then again you might not - depending on how the game treats relativistic paradoxes). And cetera et so forth.

Nice - if someone's shooting at you but missing, you'll see the bullets from their gun travel past you in reverse and eventually arrive at their gun barrel

This would make life interesting for traffic cops - if you are facing oncoming traffic and the speed limit is 30mph, cars exceeding the speed limit will appear to go backwards past you, cars travelling under the speed limit will appear to travel towards you at a speed greatly exceeding the speed limit, and cars travelling at 30mph will arrive instantaneously.

That would make Grand Theft Automobile all the more exciting.

BLACK AND WHITE retro TV game ?

Superman, who can change the course of mighty rivers, BENDS LIGHT in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.

Reminisces of paranoia.

But sound stays sound so you complete the game. In the real world, would the eye still function ? receptor biochemistry might not even register enough for nerves.

Hmm. The game from the MIT Game Lab in [Voice]'s link appears to be along these lines.

Programming this would be interesting.
