I have to do my First Aid refresher soon and truly wonder how I would react under a real situation. One, half worked, day it came close but missed the accident involving a drop saw. I am still none the wiser and on second thoughts, it could be a good thing.
So how about the next best thing, a highly staged very realistic , maybe vomit inducing first aid test?
What would it take? An amputee, a special effects guru with the appropriate resources and a clever First Aid tutor with abilities in staging and timing.
And maybe the slip of an electrified circular saw.-- wjt, Jun 06 2018 EMT suicide rates https://www.google..........0.2UJ5Yi5C7PMyou Will see some shit [2 fries shy of a happy meal, Jun 06 2018] There's a "Boy who cried wolf" risk with this idea - e.g. "Ha! - look at [wjt] over there with his leg cut open by that circular saw and spurting blood - he/she must be today's designated first aid test situation!"-- hippo, Jun 06 2018 When the staff in a chemical laboratory get blasé about the regular fire drills, it's instructive to use a theatre smoke machine to completely fill the building's lobby with dense smoke before triggering the alarm.
The resulting - quite genuine - alarm, bordering on panic, when the ambling mob finds their route blocked by dense smoke, is highly instructive, especially to them.
However, a little caution is needed as the instant switch from "Oh no, not again" to "Get out of my way !" can easily result in injuries.
Of crucial importance is not being immediately identifiable as the owner/operator of the smoke machine. Some people are prone to having a complete sense of humour failure at the slightest provocation, and their ability to harbour resentment is quite astonishing.-- 8th of 7, Jun 06 2018 Someone in a building next to a building I was working in once clearly thinks* the same way you do, [8th]. They managed to vent several hundred litres of liquid ethene (I think it was), which of course turned into several hundred thousand litres of gaseous ethene. Our building was evacuated, and the main departure from the normal fire drill practice was the frequent use of the word "fuck" - as in "get the fuck out NOW!" and "get a fucking move on!". Also, we saw more of the backs of the fire wardens than the fronts.
[*sensu lato]-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 06 2018 // which of course turned into several hundred thousand litres of gaseous ethene //
Obviously it didn't complete the transition to becoming several million litres of hot carbon dioxide and water vapour, or we would have heard. Lots of people would have heard ... if not the detonation, then the sound of glass shattering and masonry crashing to the ground.-- 8th of 7, Jun 06 2018 Was Dr. Hawking anywhere nearby at the time?-- RayfordSteele, Jun 06 2018 There was no indication of his whereabouts at the time.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 06 2018 Did you bother to check your rear-view mirror ?-- 8th of 7, Jun 06 2018 By that stage in life, I had a car with reversing sensors.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 06 2018 Were they equipped with a curiously familiar synthesized voice saying "THERE'S SOMEONE BEHIND YOU IN A MOTORIZED WHEELCHAIR, YOU IMBECILE !" ?-- 8th of 7, Jun 06 2018 No, there wouldn't have been time for all that. When I reverse, I do it enthusiastically.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 06 2018 Obviously if he wasn't seen leaving, then he must've fled in advance. I smell a conspiracy!-- RayfordSteele, Jun 06 2018 //I smell a conspiracy!//
All I can smell is ethene.-- AusCan531, Jun 06 2018 This is a vey good idea but, depending on class size, each student should be tagged to have to deal with a real-life, (as far as they know) trauma victim scenario outside of class. You'll learn right quick which people can suppress emotion long enough to deal with situations.
Then of course you just have to figure out which of those people are able to suppress rather than repress.

If this is the career you intend to choose then you Really have to consider whether you can witness mans inhumanity to man over and over again without cracking.
...like seriously. It does things to you.
I thought about going into it for many years because that's all I really know is dealing with the here-and-now no matter how fucked up and letting the emotions catch up later, but costing someone their life because of a mistake I made would eat me alive so I could never go into medicine.
You just gotta know yourself... and you'll know if you have what it takes.
Best of luck.-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Jun 06 2018 random, halfbakery
