The front and back section are screw shaped, the middle is smooth so you can run on it like in those log balancing competitions where to people run on a log trying to knock the other person off.
You'd have a long paddle you'd use to steer it with.

I'm not sure an external screw would be efficient. Maybe? My memory of the early experiments is that they found you don't need more than a fraction of a turn - hence, propellers, basically - and anything more than that just adds friction.
Maybe the way to go would be to make the log into a tube, and put the screw on the inside of the leading end. That way, you'd be powering an impellor, basically. As far as the configuration of the screw shape, a tube with an array of propellors or whatever, the neat thing about that big long float in the video is how its narrow profile seems to allow greater speed because of such a small profile facing the water's oncoming resistance so whatever configuration moved the most water most effectively. Might just want one big propellor on the front frankly.

Also occurred to me, the above could be inflatable, and the long one could be collapsible by having sections that are held together by a rope running down the middle that's pulled tight and secured to keep all the sections in line.
