You ever notice how people put their cups up on their car's roof while opening the door, then procede to forget about it as they rush away, spilling their delicious beverage all over the road. I propose that a cup holder be placed on the car's roof directly above the door to hold it while the door in opened. So if the person forgets their drink, it'll be waiting for them in the cup holder upon arrival, unspilled.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 04 2006 I was going to suggest that the door mirror could also be used...except that opening and closing the door would be a little tricky.-- Ling, Jan 04 2006 Nice. I've thought of this same thing except in my version there's a sensor in the cup holder that sets off a warning buzzer inside when you start up the car. Feel free to incorporate that in to your design if you think it's of any value.-- half, Jan 04 2006 Ooh very nice. Make sure it will keep your hot beverages hot though, otherwise unspilled or not, you won't want to drink what is left.-- PollyNo9, Jan 04 2006 what idiot would leave his/her drink on the top of the car, only to hear what sounded like a brick crashing beside the door when he/she slowed down at the end of the road and left vaguely wondering why the neighbours had begun lobbing stuff at one and what that strange wet stuff is running down the driver side windo ...-- po, Jan 04 2006 in Ashland, Oregon i once saw a woman withdraw a wedge of cash from an ATM, put it on the roof of her car while she found her keys, get in the car and drive off. happened outside a cafe full of skint beatnik types. the ensuing melee was most unseemly.-- rainbow, Jan 04 2006 Then, here we must add the Roof-top baby car seat, as I have heard of people driving off without their child!-- xandram, Jan 04 2006 That's it! Teach your baby to hold hot coffee, and solve both problems at the same time.-- Ling, Jan 04 2006 And then came the universal roof rack, with all sorts of holders and slots; one for the baby seat, the coffee, the take-out food, the laundry basket, the cat carrying case... How about a coffee cup with a magnetic base?
//a wedge of cash// Nice expression.-- Shz, Jan 04 2006 //How about a coffee cup with a magnetic base?// Simply mix iron filings with the coffee grounds.-- coprocephalous, Jan 04 2006 Stupid lady driving down the street with a laundry basket on top of car..., was I. +-- blissmiss, Jan 04 2006 Good one. Make mine a "trapdoor" cup holder, so that without a cup, I still get good aerodynamics.
And, since this is the halfbakery, to avoid spillage, have the "basket" that the cup sits in be mounted on a pivot, and have it tilt forward/backward automatically to avoid spilling.
Oh, and what [half] said, of course.-- sophocles, Jan 05 2006 Make it accessable from the inside, so that when you realize what you've done, just open the holder from underneath and retrieve your drink without stopping.-- 5th Earth, Jan 05 2006 Excellent, I have this problem every few years or so... +-- Zuzu, Jan 05 2006 Ha! [Shz], your idea is great.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 06 2006 What about rain water?-- Aq_Bi, Jan 06 2006 Then I'll stick a big picnic umbrella on the roof too, to keep the cup rain free.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 07 2006 Offtopic... I've just been helping my parents shop for a new car. The one they chose has NINE cupholders in it. For five people. In fact, to get at two of them, you'd have to throw someone out of the car. So that's nine cupholders between four.-- moomintroll, Jan 08 2006 You know that certain liquor bottles fit very well in those "cup" holders. So nine for five people is not unreasonable. Considering different choices of spirits and mixers. Need a place for the ice bucket though....-- Galbinus_Caeli, Jan 09 2006 I went into a gas station to get snacks while my tank filled up. Came out, got in the car, and took the pump and hose with me. After putting it backa nd shutting off the flow of gas (I paid) I hustled off to class. Thankfully the attendant was understanding when I came back after my class and apoligized.-- Eugene, Jan 09 2006 What about a straw/hose from the roof mounted cup, so you could drink the beverage while on the move? That way you could drink it before it heated up/cooled down. You'd need a valve to prevent death-by-drowning while driving though...
And perhaps a cup crusher to minimize drag afterwards?-- Texbinder, Jan 09 2006 Ha, I like the straw idea.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 10 2006 //Offtopic... I've just been helping my parents shop for a new car. The one they chose has NINE cupholders in it. For five people. In fact, to get at two of them, you'd have to throw someone out of the car. So that's nine cupholders between four.// love it!-- po, Jan 10 2006 I have lost so much stuff on the top of my car other than coffee cups. I would have to have a cup holder, a basket, and probably a cell phone cradle up there.-- Jscotty, Jan 11 2006 If it's that much of a problem you should buy a convertible.-- Shz, Jan 11 2006 A convertible is the easy way out.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 12 2006 This is a classic idea!-- Sparty, Jan 12 2006 //A convertible is the easy way out.//
Not if the roof is up.-- Ling, Jan 13 2006 I like this idea but wouldn't irresponsible passers-by simply discard their empty cups in your cup holder leaving you to dispose of them?-- Precinct13, Jan 13 2006 great idea for sheer visual silliness.-- benfrost, Jan 14 2006 Good to see ya eggie, even if what Ling said makes your post funny.-- blissmiss, Jan 14 2006 I got an even better idea. How about put a cup holder on the mirror?-- Jscotty, Jan 15 2006 Or better yet, a cup holder on the mirror.-- MikeOxbig, Jan 15 2006 Oh, ok.-- MikeOxbig, Apr 01 2006 I need one of these.-- craziness, Apr 01 2006 How about just making the roof of the car completely clear? Then you couldn't help but see the cup- unless of course there are lots of birds in your area... but I'm in favor of any excuse to keep the car clean.-- Rm Brz, Apr 01 2006 hah, cute.-- IcarusByNight, Apr 02 2006 random, halfbakery
