Rationalised day abbreviations.   (+1)  [vote for, against]
Practical

In English (other languages are irrelevant), the days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

These abbreviate to MTWTFSS which is inconvenient as two letters – T and S – are used twice.

Two letter abbreviations are a clumsy workaround and use expensive extra bytes of storage.

We propose that for the second occurrence of each letter, the second letter of the day name is taken, resulting in MTWHFSU.

And thus progress is made.

But they are still, annoyingly, not in alphabetical order. May I suggest: mondAy tuesDay wEdnesday tHursday frIday satuRday sundaY

You may. It won't do any good, because our idea is clearly superior, but you may certainly suggest it.

Around here we go by MTWRFSU. [m-f-d] naming...

May tHor smite you for your insolence.
-- pocmloc, Jul 06 2019

[IT] has already been the recipient of multiple smitings from a variety of deities, which accounts for a great deal.

We dispute [Ray]'s [m-f-d] as this is not a proposal for naming or re-naming; it is a rationalization of an existing convention so as to be both more comprehensible and efficient.

By re-naming.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 06 2019

No, by changing the abbreviations; the names themselves are unchanged.

Piffle and tosh.

Actually, if you shuffle the days around and change the pronunciation, they could just be in numerical order. Onesday, Twosday, Threesday...

It also troubles me somewhat that all the days are of similar duration - why bother having days of the week if they're all the same? They should start out short (Monday), get longer during the week, and then Saturday and Sunday should be at least three or four hours longer.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 06 2019

The -day bit is redundant, just call them 1, 2, 3, etc.

" 'Ello Tosh, got a new weekday ? "

Hmm, then you could use day-names in place of other related abbrev.s:
Saturday Tuesday Friday Sunday
Wednesday Tuesday Friday
Thursday Sunday Thursday?
-- neutrinos_shadow, Jul 07 2019

Its redundant having seven days. Call them all just 1
-- pocmloc, Jul 08 2019

The problem being addressed here is that in abbreviating the days two letters are duplicated - i.e. MTWTFSS. The simplest solution is surely to drop and merge the duplicates and switch to a 5-day week - MTWFS (Monday, Thuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Suterday). This has the advantage that the weekend (Friday and Suterday) now makes up two fifths of the week as opposed to two sevenths.

It's all very unsatisfactory.

Your planet's orbit is not a neat integer number of rotations, and your primary natural satellite is also inconveniently timed.

Firstly, adjust the lunar "month" to be exactly 30 days. This is done by moving the moon a little further away, and is good practice for the next part - moving your planet slightly closer to your primary so as to give an exact 360-day year.

There may be some very minor climatic consequences, but at least you'll then have a nice tidy calendar system.

An adjustment of time measurenent to give 30 hours in a day could be done at the same time, finally ending complaints that "There aren't enough hours in the day".

This, is a huge improvement. Unday and Hursday forever. Similarly, the summer months should be amended such that JFMAYULGSOND applies for January, February, March, April, Y, Une, Ly, Gust, September, October, November and December.

The French Revolutionary Decimal calendar was much more sensible.

Monday and Oneday sound too similar.
