Anyway. Right, looking back on such things as Hapsburg Jaw, the Roman nose, it crossed my mind that there may be some extremely weird horizontal transmissions of dna.
If we follow the Darwin model, then having a damn great big jawbone would be very handy in an environment with a lot of very hard food. 18th century cuisine had already worked out how to do the soft-boiled egg, soup etc, so it was not a useful piece of dna to have in that time.
So, my theory is this. Presuming there are parallel universes, with humans that diverge marginally depending on their environments, there might be some porosity at the boundaries of the universes, allowing biological material to travel horizontally as it were.
Perhaps this explains the more unfortunate congenital birth defects, from environments which are radically different to out own.
It just puzzles me and it's just weird enough to be true.-- not_morrison_rm, Jun 27 2015 Horizontal gene transfer https://en.wikipedi...ontal_gene_transfer [not_morrison_rm, Jun 27 2015] (presumably) horizontal jeans exchange http://www.moneycon...taloons_285824.html [not_morrison_rm, Jun 27 2015] //there might be some porosity at the boundaries of the universes, allowing biological material to travel horizontally as it were.//
But if DNA, why not giraffes or Cessnas? And how does this DNA get into people?
There is not a big enough unit of wrongth for this idea.-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 27 2015 Errr...if there are no parallel universes, howcome there are two separate comments from people both calling themselves "Ian Tindale"...what could be more irrefutable evidence.
If there's one comment from a hegemonising culture staring with "B" and ending in "org" (which only exists on celluloid in our universe), then I shall consider that proof complete.
//giraffes or Cessnas? Pterodactyl would be kind of Cessna and giraffe- ish.
//And how does this DNA get into people? In the traditional horizontal method.-- not_morrison_rm, Jun 27 2015 That's it, 3 comments from entity entitled "Ian Tindale". Proof positive that at least 2 parallel universes are chipping in with annos here.-- not_morrison_rm, Jun 27 2015 Can't be, halfbakery.com is region-blocked in all universes except this one. Just try going to another universe and accessing the site, see for yourself.-- tatterdemalion, Jun 27 2015 There are work-arounds.-- pocmloc, Jun 27 2015 /Quite/
As soon as the multi-universe idea comes into existence, the definition of Universe changes to one unit with a whole lot of independent subunits. The whole structure that keeps those subunits separate would be the fundamentals of the Universe.-- wjt, Jun 27 2015 //those with non-symmetrical features can have inherited diseases like the same surname
So, to get more symmetrical features one needs only to change surnames...deed polls on the NHS?
But anyway, if we presume there is porosity between the universes, then it's likely to be bit teeny, as there doesn't seem to a history of people popping over to the next parallel universe to take advantage of 50p off teabags bargains over there.
So, if the porosity is microscopic, then only microscopic beings (such as viruses) would be passing through them.-- not_morrison_rm, Jun 29 2015 //there doesn't seem to a history of people popping over to the next parallel universe //
Sure there is. What else could possibly explain Donald Trump?-- RayfordSteele, Jun 29 2015 random, halfbakery
