Product: Phone: Hanging Up
Quiet Ca-clicker   (0)  [vote for, against]
Phones with gentle ca-clicks no matter how angry you might be…

It’s the end of the day. My boss calls me and asks for some last minute reports. I knew I shouldn’t have lifted the phone, damn my auto-reflexes. Oh, there’s more he wants me to come to work on Sunday. Great. My voice is still calm; I am letting him believe that I really want to do this (first few months at a new job!). But inside I am fuming. And then I say goodbye and slam the phone. Oops… my anger took control!! Damn, did he hear the phone slam? What will he do now? Is there anyway I can find out if he heard me slam down the phone? Well with this new smart phone device one can slam the phone as hard as you like but all the other person hears at the other end is a gentle and polite ca-click! It’s the office version of a punching bag!

Nice one. I'll need to be able to switch it off though for those times when I really want to slam the 'phone down on someone. Might I suggest you supply a more descriptive name than "receiver" though?

[dobtabulous] You know i was looking for a better term but i dont know what to call it!
-- nomadic_wonderer, Nov 24 2003

That's not bad!

Ultimately, I imagine there being 3 or 4 different hang-up buttons on a telephone, ranging in furiosity from a whisperingly soft good-night click (for late-night talks with your darling) to an ear-splitting, staticky slam for the boss or ex-wife. +

How about naming this "Quiet Ca-clicker"
"Hang-up Saver"
"Phone Reciever Cushion"
-- Letsbuildafort, Nov 24 2003

[Letsbuildafort] good idea
-- nomadic_wonderer, Nov 24 2003

tip: if you want to be assertive on the telephone - stand up.

Howabout "Deceiver Receiver"?
-- phundug, Nov 24 2003

Thanks, po, I just pulled the phone off my desk.

I can think of several occasions recently when I could have used an ear-splitting feedback screech, a deafening burst of white noise, and a huge hang-up noise like a needle being shoved across vinyl at 300 dB.

it can be arranged, eggy <wicked grin>

btw I have learnt from experience that an electric shock can be administered from a faulty ear-piece <optional extra>
-- po, Nov 24 2003

Do you have a dial-in code for that?
-- egbert, Nov 24 2003

An inertia switch in handset could hang up phone in milliseconds when it senses imminent slamming into cradle.
-- wombat, Nov 24 2003

[wombat] thats the idea!
-- nomadic_wonderer, Nov 24 2003

Ingenious. :) [wombat]'s is a good mechanism, or perhaps a detector in the cradle where the mouthpiece sits (since that's the important part). Although this wouldn't help those people who are so fond of whacking the phone against the desk to vent...
-- Detly, Nov 24 2003

Can you really even hear it when someon slams down the phone on the other end? ... I usually just hold down a number on the dial pad when I feel the need to really vent some frustration. It gives a pretty good beep on the other end. And since each number has a different tone to it, you can even play some songs if you practice enough.
-- luecke, Nov 25 2003

thats interesting, can you do chords? could you write the music in numeric form. how would you play "happy birthday" for example?
-- po, Nov 25 2003

Mary Had A Little Lamb is possible ... I'm quite good at it
-- Letsbuildafort, Nov 25 2003

no chords, and you are limited to a handful of tones
-- luecke, Nov 25 2003

Mary Had A Little Lamb only requires 3 tones ... I forget how many tones Hot Cross Buns takes, but its just hold-over experiences from recorder playing in elementarty school
