If we could slip miniture quasar (laser quest) jackets onto ducks, you could shoot at them using the laser gun, and record your score. No more dead ducks.
Possible Issues. The ducks ability to fly may be impaired by the wearing of said jackets. The range of the gun may not be sufficient. Getting the jackets back of the ducks, once you are finished (possibly using well trained ducks would solve this). However, i'm sure these could all be overcome if the interest was sufficient.-- MikeOliver, Jun 01 2004 Laser Quest http://www.laserquest.com/For those who don't know. [MikeOliver, Oct 04 2004] Tazer http://www.ambient....punk/fidtasers.htmlMaybe it wouldn't kill them, and they get a body +d10 saving throw agaist the effects! [MikeOliver, Oct 04 2004] Nintendo's "Duck Hunt" comes to life? Sounds good to me (+)-- luecke, Jun 01 2004 As I've always said (well, actually, ever since I read an eloquently poetic elegy by a hunter in a newspaper), if you get your kicks stalking rare animals through the early morning mists, then do it with a camera. If you're successful, no messy brains all over the place, but you still have concrete evidence.-- DrCurry, Jun 01 2004 I suppose you could argue that a photo has less nutritional value! Not that i am, in any way, pro-hunting!-- MikeOliver, Jun 01 2004 Hunt the ducks. Just make sure you eat them afterwards.-- yamahito, Jun 01 2004 Like i said, i'm not keen on hunting. Not sure i would want to eat a duck that had been filled with lead shot anyway. This is suggested as a way to enjoy the thrill of the hunt, without the danger or the dead animals. Jackets for deer and rabbits to follow (cats and dogs for urban enviroments).-- MikeOliver, Jun 01 2004 s'ok. The lead shot is indigestible in the time it's actually in your stomach, and gathers at the bottom of your bowl. It's a conversation starter.
Actually, I'm not keen on hunting, either, on a personal level. I don't get a kick out of killing most things (some insects excepted). But I am very keen on the idea of having that level of control over the food you eat, the idea of self-provision, and the skills and abilities that can be developed (and are in the process of being lost) that can take a dead animal and make a meal.-- yamahito, Jun 01 2004 I wonder if bird bands could somehow be adopted. The "gun" could then be calibrated to read the numbers or radiotransmitter on the band.
"Joe, whadja say the duck number was you shot last week?" "3959" "Hey, I just shot that same duck today!"-- phundug, Jun 01 2004 Id like to see hunters limited to using Tazers. That way ducks wouldnt have to wear anything.-- ldischler, Jun 01 2004 I would imagine a Tazer would me more than capable of killing a duck (and probably cooking it at the same time). Will be back with a link!
edit. Link proves nothing, although if the shock doesn't kill them, the fall probably would!-- MikeOliver, Jun 01 2004 The laser quest thing is just too cheap. Modern technology is able to detect the back scattered light and analyze it for frequency shift. That way it should be possible to detect a hit even on a naked duck without a jacket.-- kbecker, Jun 01 2004 Yeah, but there is something about ducks in waistcoats...-- MikeOliver, Jun 02 2004 I don't like this at all. I think the ducks should wear fedoras instead.-- Eugene, Jun 02 2004 I'm with [kbecker]. The gun should be coordinated with a tracking system that would judge whether you would have hit the duck.-- FloridaManatee, Jun 03 2004 Ok, so we use [kbecker]'s fancy technology... We could still have little leather waistcoats just to keep 'em warm?-- MikeOliver, Jun 03 2004 From my memory of Laser Quest, being shot by your enemy deactivated your weapon for a period of time. Maybe the ducks should be given head mounted laser guns too, so that if they see you, it deactivates your gun and the duck scores a point.
It would add a stealth element to the event and would offer a few laughs back in the office when a poor player is beaten by a bunch of fowl.-- WYBloke, Jun 03 2004 I'm trying to picture a bunch of ducks out there laughing at Johnny Office because he couldn't avoid their lasered glares.-- shapu, Jun 03 2004 If you just want to see ducks in jackets, read Peter Rabbit. Also features anthropomorphosized(whew, big word) badgers, geese, hedgehogs and more!As to the actual shooting, [kbecker] has a better idea.-- blueturtle, Jun 03 2004 I was hoping for something to do with some kind of astronomical game.-- RayfordSteele, Jun 05 2004 It's illegal to shoot waterfowl with lead shot, you have to use steel.-- brewer, Jun 05 2004 Bet the ducks are feeling alot better since they brought in that rule, eh [brewer]?-- MikeOliver, Jun 05 2004 Well, no of course not, but it was in response to "Not sure i would want to eat a duck that had been filled with lead shot anyway". Of course there are those who ignore the steel shot rule. The object of it is to protect the water from becoming full of lead I think.-- brewer, Jun 06 2004 So i figured... Wouldn't want to eat duck filled with steel shot either though!-- MikeOliver, Jun 06 2004 Well, it can half some rather nasty dental side effects.-- brewer, Jun 06 2004 random, halfbakery
