Whenever I pump gas, I try to pump at full pressure, letting go right when I reach the price I want. Usually I go over a couple of cents, so I have to dig in my pocket for those extra pennies. It would be a lot easier if there were price buttons on the pump that would dispense $10, $20, or $30 worth of gas. This probably wouldn't be as popular in states like New Jersey, where you aren't allowed to pump your own gas. But I'm sure that this idea would save a lot of people from accidental overcharge frustration.-- ghillie, Sep 11 2003 Can't Pump Gas in New Jersey http://foodstamp.ap...esHaveSillyLaws.pdf [ghillie, Oct 05 2004] Not in Oregon, either http://www.virtualt...om/m/33c87/d0412/1/ [ghillie, Oct 05 2004] Gas pumps in Canada (Shell, Petro-Canada, etc) often have these buttons, usually 4 of them "$5, $10, $20, Fill"
They have an additional feature that the rate the gas is pumped slows down near the end, even when filling, so there is no spillage.
The "Fill" button acts like a regular pump.-- scarkner, Sep 11 2003 Yep, I've used these. More interestingly, you aren't allowed to pump your own petrol in New Jersey? Why?-- RoboBust, Sep 11 2003 I dunno. I think Oregon has the same law, too [see link]-- ghillie, Sep 11 2003 theres a gas station in my town that is mainly a grocery storee with small self-serve gas station built in the parking lot. you put in some money (either cash or credit card) and it gives you as much gas as you paid for.-- dickity, Sep 11 2003 I've seen these too, though admittedly not in a long time.-- phoenix, Sep 11 2003 many gas stations that i have seen require you to pay in advance, either with a credit card or cash. if you pay by cash the machine automatically shuts off at the amount you paid the cashier. however, it can be bothersome when you want to fill your tank and pay by cash (how much will it take)-- buddymatt, Dec 24 2003 This would have come in handy today. The temperature has dropped from high forties to low twenties this week... I'd rather not have to stand outside for a few minutes in that sorta temperatures... as soon as the gas is filled to the pre-chosen amount, the pump stops. Go inside (where its toasty) while you wait for it to finish pumping :)-- ghillie, Dec 20 2004 Baked in Europe.-- hamiltonpruim, Mar 17 2005 random, halfbakery
