When fitted over a pot rim, and the knob tightened, the rubber-lined channel on the bottom forms a seal with the lip of the cooking container, extending the effective height, and thus the volume, of the cooking utensil.

Turns out that you may get cancer every time you cut yourself, and that skeletal muscle tissue has learned to tell cancer when to stop growing but the rest of our organs did not need this deffence to reach the age of grandparents.Fascinating TED talk on it.
