This Idea is to use Pop Corn as the inspiration for 2 types of passive fire suppression systems.
The first variant is a paint on passive fire suppression material that will look nearly identical to the granular material used in Popcorn Ceiling treatment. The granules are constructed using a thin plastic shell containing a Fire suppressing dry chemical and a small amount of moisture so that upon heating to sufficient temperature the granules will Pop releasing their chemical to fall down upon the fire and put out or reduce its spread.
A companion product that is built a honeycomb drop ceiling tile could be used in commercial buildings that are too old for conventional fire suppression systems.-- jhomrighaus, Nov 07 2006 Ceiling Tile Graphic http://www.bimmerbo...rn%20Suppresion.jpga google Sketchup picture of this idea [jhomrighaus, Nov 07 2006] Popcorn Granule Graphic http://www.bimmerbo...n%20Suppresion1.jpga Google Sketchup Picture of this Idea [jhomrighaus, Nov 07 2006] Popcorn Security Alarm PSA_3a_20Popcorn_20Security_20Alarm [normzone, Nov 08 2006] Damn I can't be the only one who got that WIFRT feeling...-- craigts, Nov 07 2006 The ceiling would be to heavy.-- Chefboyrbored, Nov 07 2006 How so, Many food service companies use a drop ceiling made of drywall-like material that is very heavy. The AL honeycomb weighs almost nothing. Its only 3/4 of an inch thick.-- jhomrighaus, Nov 07 2006 Nice work on the illustrations, jhomrighaus. What fire suppressant will you use? It has to be safe in rooms that possibly still have people in it.-- jmvw, Nov 07 2006 //How so// Because you want to fill the ceiling with liquid or powder.-- Chefboyrbored, Nov 07 2006 Its a 2x4 drop ceiling tile that will be no denser than a conventional Food Prep area tile or a sheet of wallboard (sheetrock) I fail to see how this would be too heavy.
The popcorn granuals would be less than 1/4 inch in diameter and would paint onto exisiting surfaces.-- jhomrighaus, Nov 07 2006 Sorry, it looked like from your graphics that the honeycomb shape was quite full of liquid/powder. I sit corrected.-- Chefboyrbored, Nov 08 2006 It is full of powder but it would be no heavier than conventional Plaster board ceiling tiles.-- jhomrighaus, Nov 08 2006 random, halfbakery
