Consider the following scenarios:
A single mom lives in a rough neighborhood. Her two beautiful daughters are beginning to hang with the wrong crowd. She would never accept any kind of charity but a friend enters her name in a "contest" to win a house in a new subdivision. It's a miracle! -- she wins.
A young man who can't seem to get his life off the ground is asked by a "company" to travel to Australia and collect data on the locals. He suddenly has an exciting mission and comes alive.
A high school senior who takes spending his own hard earned money much more seriously than spending his parent's is awarded a "scholarship." He works admirably through college because he believes he's there through his own efforts.
A contest? A company? A scholarship? Bogus. It's all created through a company that allows you to help people indirectly because, for one reason or another, you don't want them to know it was you.
It would be non profit because people would be so grateful their lives (if you ever choose to tell them) or those of their loved ones were helped that they'd give huge donations, also it'd be a great source for philanthropy.
The company would do it all, letters, pamphlets, interviews, all you have to do is win the lottery.-- mack2, Jan 08 2004 //all you have to do is win the lottery.// The lesson to be leaned here - god is money.
Ya know I was recently accused of hanging about with the wrong crowd.-- Letsbuildafort, Jan 08 2004 lbaf: really? that is just aweful....:) *note the sarcasm*
but what if the wrong crowd to someone else is the right crowd for you...then who's right??....hhmmmmm-- babyhawk, Jan 08 2004 I feel as though i am in a little world, with little tea pots and little swings. its pretty outside, the grass is green and soft and today i all i will do is sit on it.... i like it here +++-- nomadic_wonderer, Jan 08 2004 Not to be confused with the Rich Relative variant?-- theircompetitor, Jan 08 2004 I think [n_w] has been huffing fertilizer again.-- Letsbuildafort, Jan 08 2004 sounds like a good idea. however people would start to catch on that maybe the contest/raffle/lottery/new job was rigged becuase advertising for the compnay would hit both the peple being duped and the people who asked the duping to happen.-- Space-Pope, Jan 08 2004 [Letsbuildafort] you have an uncanny ability to know the truth then!-- nomadic_wonderer, Jan 08 2004 Thanks ya'll. Truth be told I have been fanticising about this idea for years and only needed to see it in print and read comments on it to see how foolish it is. The biggest flaw, I think, is the deception. I guess I need to let God be God.-- mack2, Jan 09 2004 Someone has been sniffing fairy dust.Could not happen in the real world.-- python, Jan 09 2004 excellent... reminds me of "The Game" - would be a great idea for a movie!-- dentaclause, Jan 10 2004 I suspect that deep inside, apart from having little concept of finance, you are one of these really nice people. Let's all think like you.-- wagster, Jul 02 2004 [Tabs] - Consider the impasse of a one God universe: he is all-knowing and all-powerful. He can't go anywhere because he is already everywhere. He can't do anything since the act of doing presupposes opposition. His universe is irrevocably thermodynamic having no friction by definition. So he has to create friction: war, fear, sickness, death to keep this dimeshow on the road. Sooner or later: "look boss, we don't have enough energy left to fry an elderly woman in a fleabag hotel fire".
"Well, we'll have to start faking it."
Joe looks after him sourly and mixes a bicarbonated soda. {urp} "Sure, start faking it and leave the details to Joe."
With thanks to William Burroughs.-- wagster, Jul 22 2004 random, halfbakery
