This dictionary contains the 2,000 most common English nouns (and occasional adjectives and verbs), together with a suggested drawing of each. The drawings are quick and easy. Not true-to-life realism; just a few lines; each can be drawn in a few seconds.
There's a certain set of things that you need to be able to draw in order to play Pictionary (or "Win, Lose, or Draw") successfully. [for definition see below]
Most people can draw water (wavy lines), or a person, or the outline of the United States. These are among the most basic shapes you need. But what if you had to draw a pump? A dam? Oil? These are objects that you can't just draw by memory or by concatenating polygons off the top of your head. You really have to know which lines and curves must be put together to give the representation of these objects. The answer might not be obvious. For example, you might not think of drawing an oil well to represent oil, and instead spend minutes trying to draw an amorphous liquid in a salad-dressing container ... unless you have read The Pictionary Dictionary.
You will enjoy your improved ability to express yourself. And win every Pictionary game you play, too.
(Pictionary is a board game where you are given a word or phrase, e.g. "Time flies" or "Busy signal" or "George Washington" or "Smoke Detector", and you have 1 minute to draw it so that your partner can guess what it is. You can use all the paper you want, but you can only draw; you can't say anything. Your partner yells out guesses throughout.)
Thank you.-- phundug, Jul 01 2003 Pictionary http://www.hasbro.c...9475/dn/default.cfm [half, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004] Online Pictionary http://www.isketch.net/An online game similar to pictionary [suctionpad, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004] Wait, wait, now I've got it! http://members.trip...azy/pictionary.html(Now I know why Pictionary doesn't come bundled with a mouse and Microsoft Paint.) [half, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004] You're welcome.-- k_sra, Jul 01 2003 Pictionary is similar to charades except the clues are drawn instead of acted out. Fun even for the artistically challenged. +-- half, Jul 01 2003 I like this + but think it would be tough to draw a picture for each of the definitions of, say, "set."-- bristolz, Jul 01 2003 My reading of this is that you only need one picture for each word/syllable, even if it doesn't correspond to the meaning currently invoked.
So just draw some stylized stage scenery.-- DrCurry, Jul 01 2003 Let's get a game going...I pick bristolz for my team.-- half, Jul 01 2003 That's right: you only need one drawing for each word. If the phrase is "spring flowers", you could still draw a coily thing for a spring, and hopefully your partner would figure it out. So only the coily thing would be pictured in the Dictionary.-- phundug, Jul 01 2003 Okay, half. I've selected a card for you. Hmm. You have to draw <whisper> a buoyant space elevator </whisper> and bristolz has to guess what it is. No cheating!-- snarfyguy, Jul 01 2003 Heh. Not exactly what I had in mind.-- half, Jul 01 2003 Changing the rules in the middle of the game, are we? Harrumph!-- snarfyguy, Jul 01 2003 ok, ok...

At the top? Swizzle stick? Phylum marker? Decorative sprinkler? Palm tree? Cotter pin? Meat thermometer?-- bristolz, Jul 01 2003 Time's up! Oh, that was a good go, [half]. Ok, now [bristolz] is on MY team...-- k_sra, Jul 01 2003 No fair, I was working, I want to try again (link)-- half, Jul 01 2003 Hmm.
Men who prefer ants to women should be sent into space?-- bristolz, Jul 01 2003 I don't like pictionary. I have a.. erm.. friend who's profession is as a graphic artist and whenever they play everyone gets the picture straight away, no matter how obscure. The other team get pissed at my friend, because they consider his participation cheating and then the players on my friend's team get pissed at him because he is useless at understanding their pictures which they interpret as condescending criticism of their talent compared to his. If he suggests handicapping himself by using his left hand or something everyone interpret's this as immodesty, and gets pissed at him.
ok, its me. And that's a morning erection isn't it?-- Nickynackynoo, Jul 01 2003 Its a reeeally long rope getting sucked into a black hole.-- Shz, Jul 01 2003 hob and jutta also draw, and do so well.-- thumbwax, Jul 01 2003 I think that there's lots of people on this site who are good at drawing. I've played Pictionary and found that knowing how to draw doesn't really help that much.-- bristolz, Jul 01 2003 I miss the General and Matty.-- po, Jul 01 2003 There is a duel mode in pictionary where one person from each team draws at the same time. These instances always end up (with my friends anyway) in one of two ways. Either one team steals the clues from their opposition's drawer or the word/phrase is so hard that one team turns to drawing pictures that start with each letter of the answer (e.g. a van, an apple, a nut, and so on for the word "vanish"). Both practices are cheating I believe.-- Bamboo, Apr 23 2004 random, halfbakery
