Culture: Funeral: Cremation
Personalized Product Container Urn   (+3, -1)  [vote for, against]
Why put your ashes in a staid old vase lookin' thing?

For those who choose cremation, there should be a line of product container urns available that reflect the personal choices and likes of the deceased.

For example, a coffee drinker may choose to have his or her ashes placed in a specially designed coffee can. The words "Maxwell House" will be replaced with the deceased's name written in the same style as the logo. A lover of Maryland crab cakes may select the large sized "Old Bay" can, again with the name replacing the brand.

Croissant, if for no reason other than reminding me of the scene with the ashes in 'The Big Lebowski'.

alx... yes I'd forgotten about that. Well the Folger's can style is available too.

I'm thinking for myself, I'll take a large sized Burger King soda cup and lid (no straw, please). I'll just have to change the word "Burger".

I wonder what sort of container thumb wax comes in. heh

The only problem with urns is where to keep them. If they have product-like names on them (ie, Spam becomes Sam, etc) then they are more prone to be tampered with. And if you are in proximity to several elderly relations, you may want to invest in some stackable urns or the urn on the [link] provided above...

An 18-pounder artillery shell would be classically cool. Croissant.

I had an aunt who had a swig out of a bleach bottle while her mind was distracted. this idea worries me on many levels.
-- po, Jun 19 2003

This is "sort of" baked in some asian country, where they turn your ashes into some cool looking and colorful crystal-looking rocks, and put in a glass box. Some people end up looking more beautiful once dead than alive.

Talking of, I don't want a funeral. I want my body to be thrown to the sea, to be eaten by submarine creatures as a fast return to the circle of life. However, if I had to choose one of these, I'd pick a 35mm film can. Good idea! (+)

fishbone.

I care not what you do with me...

but I demand respect for the people I have loved...
-- po, Jun 19 2003

po, this is respectful. This would be their will, if they so chose. You would not do this unless they requested it, and would in fact be respecting their wishes. I think some people would want this service.

To be sure, the containers would be sealed up so that they couldn't be accidently opened. Wouldn't want a visiting relative accidently opening up a can of Foster's, not noticing it's now labeled 'Esther's'. (Of course, to aid in this, you shouldn't keep Esther in the fridge either.)

and if they were not in the position to ask for this?

opening too many wounds...

distasteful
-- po, Jun 19 2003

//I had an aunt who had a swig out of a bleach bottle while her mind was distracted.//

[Po]: My mom did the same thing recently. Are you my sister that they never told me about?

I can't see what's disrespectful here if this how someone chooses to be lain to rest.

Same goes for novelty tombstones. I saw Mel Blanc's grave last time I was in L.A. It reads (in large part) "Th - th - th - that's all folks!" I thought it was kinda tacky, but hey, if that's what he wanted, then who am I to say anything?

I am thinking seriously now how I might like my ashes to be made into a beautiful mosaic bar of pressed glycerin soap. I could ask my loved ones to host a block party wake featuring giant bubble wands, super soakers, kites, a terrific BBQ and me. I would ask that they, at the pinnacle of their wet and soapy fun, use me to wash away their regrets and sadness in a ceremonial ritual for re- newing their own intrinsic priorities in life. Within just a few days, I will have made the grass a little greener and incouraged a few little mushrooms to sprout.

I guess I would not need any urn. I could just be distributed in handmade-paper wrappers bearing a likeness to the familiar product "Dove".

// Your big clown shoes are trampling on people's feelings. Show some respect if you want yours respected, too. //

I am showing respect. If people don't want to see it, what can I do about that? We've all had losses in life and it will continue to be so.

// Death isn't funny when it's someone you loved and miss //

Nope, it sure isn't. Been there, done that, jutta. Rare is the person among us who hasn't. With all due respect I don't really need your education on the matter.

The idea is not intended as disrespectful and I made that clear, I thought. If someone wants to read this idea as disrespectful, I suggest they read something else.

// and if they were not in the position to ask for this? //

Well then you wouldn't do it, would you? Simple. po, this idea is quite obviously not for you. I am sorry about that, I certainly didn't mean to cause you issue. But rather than stay here and take offense, perhaps it would be better if you just read something else.
-- waugsqueke, Jun 19 2003

I'd like my ashes mixed in with vinyl that's pressed into a record of my music. Then people could play it if they wanted to remember me. Not that anyone has a phonograph anymore, but who wants their ashes made into an mp3?
-- snarfyguy, Jun 19 2003

//rather than stay here and take offense, perhaps it would be better if you just read something else//

ok. I'm off!
-- po, Jun 19 2003

Oh, I would hate to be knocked "accidently" off of the mantle and into the fireplace. Oh well, ashes to ashes...

[Pericles], I’m with you 100% on that one. It’s written in my will.
-- Shz, Jun 19 2003

nice [shz]! I will print your anno so my family see I'm not crazy and that his is actually something other people would wish.
-- Pericles, Jun 19 2003

The swift and cruel hand of Death arrives in many forms, none of which are pleasant, though as well they should, some forms create strong reactions from those who were close to the dearly departed. This idea addresses fulfillment of a final wish for the departed, and in so doing, eases closure for those left behind. Rather than the individual's remains being stored in a container which is, dare I say - anonymous as a statistic, it's a truly personal statement - a fitting memorial for those left behind to reflect upon.
