Omnileague Sports Teams   (+2, -1)  [vote for, against]
Pick the sport for each match

The Omnileague consists of a group of sports teams, divided into various appropriate divisions and conferences, etc. Each team is made up of a group of players of various talents, approximately 25-30 or so in number. Typical of most leagues that exist now.

The difference is that the teams play a variety of sports - anything from American/Canadian football, Rest-of-the-world football/soccer, baseball, basketball, ice or field hockey, rugby, lacrosse, volleyball, curling, darts, etc. Not sure about cricket - it's gotta be a game that can be played in less than a week.

The sport any two teams play is chosen by a random process a few days before the scheduled match, to allow for venue selection and ticket sales. The teams have time to select which players will occupy which positions and practice up.

The whole season goes on like this. Some interesting matches might occur and some teams might naturally excel at some sports but play poorly in others. "Smith won't be pitching tonight - he has a torn Achilles tendon after being taken down in a sack during last week's football game."

This would have been the perfect league for Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. Maybe even Michael Jordan.

C B Fry - The English Andy Goram http://www.time.com...90816-29988,00.html
"... a great batsman at a time when English cricket was at its zenith, an international soccer player, the co-holder of the world long-jumping record while still at university, and an outstanding amateur all-rounder." [calum, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

I would only follow the league if it included curling in addition to the standard sports. [link]

In spite of the practicality issues, I wouldn't want anyone to know what the sport would be until right before the game. :) ("And the sport is... chess?")

But still, +

Why stop there? Have one team playing volleyball while the other is trying to play lacrosse. Or have both teams playing football, only one side is playing American football and the other is playing soccer. It would liven things up no end!

Seriously, I loathe sports but I can't help liking the original idea.
