We all know that Google gets the best results curently for most search requests. BUT it doesn't always work as well as you would like. Also, there are sites with techies working harder and harder to try to push their site up the listings - this may not reflect what you are looking for. So....
NotGoogle is a search engine that evaluates its results by searching on Google. The lower it is rated on Google, the higher it appears on NotGoogle. A page that can't be found in Google gets to the top in NotGoogle. A bit like the computer equivalent of searching in the bits of dirt and fluff on the floor.-- hamiltonpruim, Apr 13 2003 Google API http://www.google.com/apis/api_faq.html [DrCurry, Oct 04 2004] The Google Mirror http://elgoog.rb-ho...ie=1-9588-OSI&hl=neIronically, only a mirror site is up. [jutta, Jul 12 2005] So, this would be a way of finding the fishbones (instead of the croissants) in a haystack?
For pure amusement, I like the idea of a site that returns the "least useable/appropriate response" to a query, as long as the results are consistently funny.
Now I can't decide if I should croissant or fishbone.-- Don Quixote, Apr 13 2003 I kinda like this idea. But I think I like it b/c it leads to other ideas like a "Googlefilter" where you can sort Google in your own way. Like being able to have a metasearch that can compare Google results and Inktomi results and give you the ability to use boolean operations between them.... can metasearch engines do this already?-- mhh5, Apr 13 2003 What happens when google indexes the top results from not google....other than that +-- futurebird, Apr 13 2003 this is pretty easy to do with google already. google is amazing flexible in how it returns its searches.-- ironfroggy, Apr 13 2003 I just found a book on how to program for the Google API. Apparently it's quite an industry.-- DrCurry, Apr 13 2003 DIdn't someone suggest this a few months ago and get buried in fishbones? It was a search engine that found the least relevant hits for your query. Nobody liked it, but I don't really get how this is different.
I'll try to dig it up.
(later) Well, it's either in another category, or, more likely, deleted. Oh well.-- snarfyguy, Apr 13 2003 1) What magic technology is NotGoogle using to find pages Google hasn't yet found? 2) Presuming 1 is possible, it will result in a ton of one-off pages that are all equal candidates for the 'top' position on NotGoogle. Almost universally irrelevent and useless. 3) Google will have some issues with the name, I'm sure.-- waugsqueke, Apr 13 2003 waugs: 1) Given that it is possible to remotely search multiple search engines, and then compare results (to find, for example, pages that are not in Google), that part is not much of a problem. (Trying to find pages that are not in *any* search engine is an oxymoron.) 3) Apparently Google does not mind its name being used with permission - so, who knows? 2) Agreed.-- DrCurry, Apr 13 2003 Curry, I know you can compare results. We're talking about Google here, though. How do I find a list of pages that Google has not spidered?-- waugsqueke, Apr 13 2003 No, no... I'm asking for a link.-- waugsqueke, Apr 13 2003 Okay, I guess my point is not coming through here at all. Allow me to simplify: if Google didn't find it, how the hell is any other search engine going to find it?
If NotGoogle has discovered a way to find pages that Google isn't finding, well, that's a pretty fucking incredible claim to be able to make. I thought maybe you knew of one, which is why I was asking for a link. If a site could do this, then screw this stupid idea - they could market themselves as the site that has "even more search results than Google".-- waugsqueke, Apr 13 2003 Ah, I see what you're getting at. It is commonly known (well, I knew it, and this book repeated it), that each search engine has indexed overlapping but different, rather small subset of all the pages on the Internet. So, there are many pages *not* in Google that *do* appear on one or other of the other search engines.
I think we can all agree there is no way to find pages that do not appear on *any* search engine (since once you've found them, they're now in your search engine), but that wasn't the requested filter.
I cannot find any up-to-date statistics on the search engines and the reach of their indexes.-- DrCurry, Apr 13 2003 A lot of people seem to miss the point. If you look at the logs from a small website, you'll see that Google visited but - if you don't figure in Google's scheme of things - no search query will return your page.
NotGoogle is a quick way to attempt a reverse approach - not the least relevant, the relevance should still be there (ie, the search terms "and-ed") BUT it should first give you the sites that Google wouldn't, or only grudgingly.
Make no mistake, Google may be more benign than Microsoft but their influence is no less pervasive. NotGoogle should be the "Free Press" turned onto Google.
Of course.... Google would be best placed to create this service........-- hamiltonpruim, Apr 14 2003 Just because the most anticipated answers are found on Google, I make a point of searching Dogpile (which includes Google and eight or nine other search engines) when looking for off-beat information and images. I'm often surprised how much detailed scientific information seems to bypass the Google filters but manages to lodge in these infrequently visited by-roads. They seem to exist something like modern-day versions of Rte.66: storied and scenic asphaltic alternatives to efficient but blandly homogeneous concrete interstates.
But as <jutta> points out, this is not "the" other thing; it is just "an"-other thing. Sometimes it suffices.-- jurist, Apr 15 2003 Hehe, I like it. Would be useful for finding my site!-- Parvenu, Apr 15 2003 Seems pointless. Someone said that getting information from the internet is like getting a drink of water from a fire hydrant; this would only add to the mess.-- angel, Apr 16 2003 Ok, ok. I think that I've remembered where the inspiration for this idea came from (http://www.searchlore.org/tadimens.htm). It's about searching =beyond= the search engine. duh... but NotGoogle is a search engine....-- hamiltonpruim, Apr 16 2003 I'm looking for a way to do a NOT SafeSearch filter - so I only get mature content. It's annoying when one's pornsearch is obscured by plain content.-- FloridaManatee, Aug 13 2003 <sway> Amen, [Florida]! </sway>-- pooduck, Jul 12 2005 random, halfbakery
