Musical Switch   (0)  [vote for, against]
A musical network switch.

Have you ever been mesmerized by the random-yet-predictable patterns of lights on a moderately busy Ethernet switch? Even if you have not, have you wondered what it would sound like? Or, do you enjoy the random tinkles of windchimes or desktop waterfalls? If so, consider the Musical Switch.

The Musical Switch is simply the hybrid of a cheap synthesizer with a multiport ethernet switch. Each activity LED is linked to a different musical note. Listening to the Musical Switch will give you an idea of how busy your network is, and which are the busiest connections, without having to watch the actual lights.

(This wouldn't be hard to do... I'd be interested to know if someone has already done it.)

J-M J's website. http://www.jarre.net/
It has a lovely virtual laser harp keyboard thingy on it. [gnomethang, Oct 04 2004]

You can put an AM radio next to many devices with LEDs, and the flashing will cause interesting noises to come out of the radio.

Cool. Make the music more complicated, though, or else it'll mostly sound like garbage.

Oh--better yet, make use of percussion sounds.

Just don't stand in the server room when everybody's logging on in the morning. Few have survived with their ears (and mind) intact.

That may possibly explain the server support team around here.

I saw something similiar in a catalog once, a decorative fountain whose, water spewing matched the beat of whatever music was playing in the vicinity. This would be a cool product.
