In the key of...

Embedded in your new 'smart' car key is a memory chip (a couple of GB should do the job), and on to this can be uploaded mp3 files (the method of transfer is open to debate, but I like the idea of inserting the key into a replica ignition on the pc).
The key's battery is charged in a similar fashion (see link for elaboration).
Whilst on the go, a set of headphones can be plugged into the key, and the music played through a series of simple controls on the side of the key.
However, when the key is inserted into the ignition of the car, the vehicles entertainment system can access the music, and play it through the car speakers.
Then when you arrive at your destination, plug the headphones back in, and rock on!

I would love this. Of course, as we eliminate door-keys and luxury cars begin to ditch the ignition key, I'm not sure how long this would really last. Then again, it just might convince us all to keep our keys.

How is this any better - useful - convenient - otherwise advantageous - than using a regular mp3 player that routes through the car stereo?

I know storage is small these days, but I don't think you're going to fit a couple gigs into a car key. Maybe the fob.

It is more convenient because you have one less thing to fuss with when getting into and out of the car.

I have a 1GB key drive and the stamp is teensy. I think you could put more than 2GB on a key w/o much problem.

Have you ever tried to start your car with a regular mp3 player?

It seems like one more thing that could malfunction. I'll stick with my mp3 head unit.

Sorry, I beat you to it.
