Movie Theater Rental   (-1)  [vote for, against]
Rent a custom-made theater

This is exactly as it sounds. Have a theater room that is rentable for wedding receptions, birthdays, whatever. It's not just a big roomful of chairs that will be empty. The room and screen are smaller than usual, and instead of rows of chairs, there is a table (used for eating, cake, gifts), a couch, and a few armchairs. In addition, you have the option of catering, or having a certain amount of food from the concession stand included in the initial price.

Sounds like any community center or social club with a movie screen and a kitchen. Of course, lots of real movie theaters are available for private parties, too, with full run of the lobbies, concessions, and screening areas.

Hmmm...don't see many of those services available in any of the places I've lived. And as far as 'community centers with movie screens and a kitchen'...well, seems as if they would only show normal TV or movies already released on video. If I wanted that, I could spend a few thousand dollars on a decent home theater system. Part of the draw of this would be to watch new releases. As for the theater rental, how many movie theaters have you been in that have reclining armchairs and catering services?

After receiving two negative votes, I'm just curious how people think this is a bad idea. It's really not, and that's not me saying it just because I'm the 'inventor'. At the very least it would be neutral. You wouldn't agree to a movie theater with reclining armchairs, full catering services, and the lack of assholes who just don't know when to shut up? Come on.

Just curious if the people who think this is a bad idea would comment and explain why.

//and the lack of assholes who just don't know when to shut up//

It's usually the "birthday party at the movies"/"movies as a social event" crowd that are most annoying... why would I want to sit in a cinema dedicated to it?

I've lived in a very small town and a very large city. In both places, I've seen advertising before the movie started that said "this theater is available for rental" and suggested parties, lectures, business presentations, reunions, etc.

What [half] said. I'm in small-town Ontario and movie theatre rentals are commonplace. You're getting boned because the idea is not original, not because it's a bad idea.

Pocketass, that approach never works here. See phoenix's profile page for an explanation.

Baked. Many theaters in the US do this. They will even cater it if you want.
-- CaptainWes, May 02 2004

I agree with [wes]. The cinema i used to work in rented out screens on a regular basis, and they'd let you choose what film you wanted to watch in it!
-- MikeOliver, May 02 2004

Hmm...I haven't seen these things around. But at the same time, the theaters available for rental don't have couches, do they? Seemed like a good idea, obviously it already is. Oh well. Thanks for clearing up those negative votes. Makes sense.

Boned. For whining when you didn't get the result you wanted.
