Micro Fireplace   (+14)  [vote for, against]
burning and arcing

Essentially a ventilated, fireproof microwave oven, this insert comes in many sizes to fit the inside walls of fireplaces and even wood stoves. Build a fire inside the oven, close the screen door and enjoy the fireworks.

Besides warming and drying the wood to give faster fire starting and more efficient burning, the microwave has pointy metal anodes that cause plasma arcing. The blue sparks shooting throughout the orange and yellow flames provide a luminous, electrifying display.

(?) Plasma within a microwave http://archives.mlu...ptember/001246.html
I thought I'd seen this before. [skinflaps, Oct 29 2004]

pocket sized fireplace? http://www.nimblewillnomad.com/stove.htm

Sounds like someone left the fork in their mashed potatotes last night.

Like tin foil in an old microwave. Impressive display indeed.

I assumed this would be a pocket sized fireplace to create a romantic environment anywhere, but this is nice too.

Trying to roast marshmallows would instead inflate them to huge proportions. +
-- sartep, Oct 29 2004

Oh, I was really hoping for the tiny, portable fireplace [Worldgineer] mentioned. I suppose this is good too. Still...
-- harderthanjesus, Oct 29 2004

Yeah, something the size of a cat, to burn twigs in. The problem to be solved is the need to add fuel every few minutes. Of course, that might be nostalgic for some, like ex-pipe smokers.

What will it do to AOL CDs?
-- Mr Burns, Oct 29 2004

I’ve tried that. After 2-3 seconds of sparkly static, web-like lightning patterns are etched in the discs.

Anything's an improvement

Have you played with this [FarmerJohn]? And if so, how long does it take for the flames to kill the nuker?
-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Oct 30 2004

I was just going to add that as well. The magnetron gets fried after a fashion.
-- waugsqueke, Oct 30 2004

[2 fries shy + waugs] No, but I would recommend a limited-term guarantee on the product.

I thought this would be a fireplace which would fit in a 5 1/4" bay, to make your PC look more homely.
-- hippo, Oct 30 2004

Cooling that thing would be a nice engineering challange. Balancing between overheating the CPU an putting out the flame might be tricky.
-- Worldgineer, Oct 31 2004

Now associated with fewer CPU failures, Inglenook 2000!

Arcing produces ozone.Run it close to the stratosphere, and you may fill the hole in the ozone layer.
