Living Hat   (+6, -1)  [vote for, against]
A wide brim hat filled with flowers that grow.

This hat is made of straw or other lightweight material. The brim is wide, curved upwards and lined with plastic. Add the peat moss and potting soil up to the brim edge, then plant shallow rooted, low growing flowers such as allysium, petunias and dianthus. These flowers like lots of sun so wear it outside often and only water when the soil is dry. Caution, do not bend over while wearing this hat. Thanks for beautifying the landscape.

Wouldn't it take ages to grow? Why not just wear plastic flowers?

oh puleeese...

Ah! Reminds me of my grandmother’s brim garden. She’d say, “sonny, get me my hat,” and I’d stagger under the weight of the thing. It was all right at first, when she just had the daffodils. But then the Bonsai, and later on when she wasn’t thinking as clearly, she planted the oaks. Live oaks that grew and grew and had Spanish moss hanging down. She’d say bring me my hat and I’d run and hide under the house.

I would want herbs so that when I cook, I could pinch off a bit of fresh basil or thyme. [+]

Bees.

Cows. Cow pats... Bun for the drawing.
-- ConsulFlaminicus, May 18 2004

[waugs, Con.] the hummingbird will chase away the bees, and from the little I've observed, would chase away the cows too.

Marvelous. Would probably improve posture. I'm waiting for the flowering duvet cover. +

(+) Air plants would do away with the root problem and you won't have to carry extra pounds of water on your head. [link]

A power plant would keep your head warm.

[FJ], har har.

I like the air plant idea, in fact I am seriously planning to make a living hat, will send photos.
-- dentworth, May 18 2004

it would get heavy.
-- DesertFox, May 18 2004

I remember that Florist Foam hat from a while back ... while not the same, its still scandalously familiar ...
-- Letsbuildafort, May 18 2004

the two finished products would look the same, but mine is ALIVE and the Florist version is DEAD...
-- dentworth, May 18 2004

Nice, dentworth. I'd want some kind of trailing plant at the back, to look like luxuriant hair. And perhaps a water feature on the top, with a little babbling brook in which miniature koy could frolic and play...

More realistically, though, mine would probably end up over-run with weeds and smelling of cat pee.

(from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty)
"I'm dentworth of Paris
I shriek with chic
My hat of the week
Cause 6 divorces, 3 runaway horses..."
-- RayfordSteele, May 18 2004

this is funny, because a friend and i just invented this a few days ago . hydroponics would be easier on your head though.
-- monk, May 19 2004

Sorry, Dent. But I must piss on your lovely idea. Its what we Kats do when we appreciate art.
-- The Kat, May 19 2004

i love it! chia hat...

tell me what you think of mine
-- Evenessence, May 20 2004

You could have a moss hat. +
-- sartep, May 20 2004

I agree with DesetFox- I think it would get heavy. And ugly. You would need to always be transplanting a blooming floral display. Too much work for something that just keeps the sun out of your eyes.

Plus, you would get stinging insects buzzing around your head.
-- macncheesy, May 20 2004

You say that like it's a bad thing. Makes a lovely gift.
-- thumbwax, May 28 2004

sorry to revive old stuff, but I wanted to upload the illustrations

If you could coerce a pair of canaries to nest in the bonsai tree, you would be a step closer to a self-supporting ecosystem up there. [+]

Aren't we all already wearing the living everchanging hat?
