Several androids in the library are ready to service us in times of Corona closure.
The librarians continue work from home, and give you limited control over the robot. It will find the unscanned book, pull it out from the shelf, page through the book for a short time at your service scanning the text and OCRing it (saving it for further access without the need for accessing it the next time around).
You pay for the extra time and for a large amount of material.
The human-like robot can also be used for any digitizing project including one specialized in reading receipts and invoice docs for certified public accountant offices.
Only authenticated identified users will be authorized to use the robots. (Which leads to the idea of an ID robot that comes to your house and can give you authenticated credentials, but that's for another day)
Not much artificial intelligence is needed since most actions will be initiated and controlled by the human librarian or reader.
The reader will have limited access: They can only set the book that they want to see (and administrator intervention will occur if any other book is being accessed), scan the shelves and pull out books for checking their names. Scanning pages of text will be allowed only for the book that the reader ordered. Each image will be stamped openly with the user's name and also with hidden watermarks, so that it cannot be stolen.
A low resolution streaming video of the library experience will also be supplied to allow navigation in the library, for picking up artifacts that may cause the robot to stumble, and for accessing the books from the shelves, tables, and from the floor if they fell.-- pashute, Dec 08 2020 Remote research and reference library [pocmloc, Dec 08 2020] This looks like a perfect application for the Borg. [+]-- whatrock, Dec 08 2020 I just spoke to my brother about it. And he said it would be easier to have a small group of librarians or even a single librarian with a video camera and a scanner.-- pashute, Dec 08 2020 C link-- pocmloc, Dec 08 2020 random, halfbakery
