Apparently, if you're stranded on a desert island, you can use the hole as a 1x magnifier to focus the sun's rays and start a fire.
You can also use them as a navigational aid. You place one in the middle of a flat rock; then place two polos on the north side of the first one, three on the south side, four on the east side and five on the west.
