International 'Dance For Security Cameras' Day   (+54, -3)  [vote for, against]

I propose 8th January as International 'Dance For Security Cameras' Day. This gives you all 364 days to practice.

On IDFSC Day, everyone must - at least once during the day - turn to face one of those overhead or wall-mounted security cameras and perform a short dance of their choosing. It may be a brief soft- shoe routine, or a momentary excerpt from Saturday Night Fever. Couples may perform a few steps of a Waltz or Tango. Trios may prefer to sand-dance past the camera, Wilson-Keppel-and-Betty- esquely. It's up to you.

You then carry on as if nothing whatsoever had happened.

I think the element of organisation and co- ordination, suggested by some of the foregoing annotations, is something which should not fail to be lacking.

Yes, that's right, Mr. bin Laden. Just a few seconds of "the hustle" is all we'll need. Thank you.

Some of the foregoing annotations fill some much-needed gaps in my original concept. Gentlemen, thank you.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 10 2008

Why can't we have it next month? I don't want to wait until next year.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 10 2008

Ah, Denholm old chap, I'm dreadfully sorry. The thing is, I know you've got your straw boater and blazer on standby, but I suspect that many other bakers are not as well prepared as your good self.

However, there's nothing to stop you practicing, as long as nobody else does - otherwise it would sort of spoil the actual event.

+ yeah, I vote for next month, too, as I missed it.
-- xandram, Jan 11 2008

How about Feb. 29th '08 to start and then each Feb. 29th thereafter. To give everyone time to prepare. We could tie some other things to this event and eleminate other annual repititions, and make the day more useful.

Use the Gregorian calendar, which according to Wikipedia is as follows; the current standard calendar in most of the world, adds a 29th day to February in 97 years out of every 400, a closer approximation than once every four years.

This is implemented by making every year divisible by 4 a leap year unless that year is divisible by 100. (and don't forget) If it is divisible by 100 it can only be a leap year if that year is also divisible by 400.

Gentleman, I'm afraid Wheels have been Set In Motion, and 8th January it must be. There are forces at work here, forces more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 11 2008

//+ yeah, I vote for next month, too, as I missed it.//
Erm, in the true Spirit Of The HB, even the the proposer missed it - posted Jan 9th.

/Gentleman, I'm afraid Wheels have been Set In Motion, and 8th January it must be./

OK, I'll go with the 8th of Jan.

But since we have passed that date and we have an extra day this year, we could use it for practicing. I know I could use some practice. Let's include a mid day global wave, just for me.
-- UfosOverChina, Jan 11 2008

is it Wimbledon already?
-- po, Jan 11 2008

//The ability to make a planet dance is nothing compared to the power of the Force // You're not taking this seriously, I can tell.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 11 2008

// You're not taking this seriously, I can tell //

On the contrary, we are taking the idea perfectly seriously - it's you we're making fun of ....
-- 8th of 7, Jan 12 2008

//Shuld we also dress and talk like pirates, on Dance Day?// It's an attractive option. However, being dressed in full piratical regalia raises three problems:

(a) It's very difficult to do a plausible sand-dance or waltz in a pirate costume. In fact, anything except a hornpipe would look out of place.

(b) It's difficult to stroll into the field of view (pre-dance) in a pirate costume without attracting attention, unless of course you happen to live in Jamaica, where there are worryingly few security cameras.

(c) By the same token, it's tricky to carry on "as if nothing whatsoever had happened" post-dance whilst wearing a parrot and a tricorn hat. The carrying on as if nothing whatsoever had happened part is central to the concept.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 12 2008

you wear a parrot?
-- po, Jan 12 2008

I would love this idea, but it's the audience that has me worried. Night watchmen, toll booth operators, not a handfull of rich guys/gals with gates around the estate.

Doberman pinschers ... thanks UB

Mr. Burns
-- dentworth, Jan 12 2008

//you wear a parrot?// It's attached to the epaulettes.

//it's the audience that has me worried// Hence the essential brevity of the performance. A tired nightwatchman catching a two-second burst of Saturday Night Fever is unlikely to have the self confidence to act - it would be awkward to explain to his superiors in the morning. A tired nightwatchman who also catches a three-second waltz and a momentary tango on two other cameras is especially likely to be befuddled.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 12 2008

sweet!!! I'm so marking my calender and whats more going to practice.
-- shakeandbake, Jan 13 2008

[+] Great idea, but what would happen if it was a busy place and everyone was dancing different moves to different time?

Think of the toes!
-- yaragn, Jan 13 2008

//But what would happen if it was a busy place and everyone was dancing different moves//

Nothing great is accomplished without some sacrifice. However, since the whole day is available in which to perform your brief display, this is unlikely to be a major risk. The intention is for a busy crowd-scene on the monitor screen to be peppered, at random intervals, with brief instants of isolated dance. The overall effect for the security guard will be a little like looking at a busy night sky and wondering whether you saw or imagined that shooting star that passed by the corner of your eye.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 13 2008

Any terrorists would stick out a mile, with their normal walking and blending into the background.
-- Ling, Jan 13 2008

10 minutes to go in the UK. I hope everyone has got their dancing shoes on!
-- MadnessInMyMethod, Jan 07 2009

I did a very brief Saturday Night Fever move for our on-site cameras. However, it has to be said, less than 30% of the people around me joined in. Quite a bit less than 30% actually.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 08 2009

I felt a lot less conspicuous knowing that our security cameras aren't watched, but very enjoyable anyway. Exactly 100% of the surrounding people joined in!
-- MadnessInMyMethod, Jan 09 2009

Damn, missed it again.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 09 2009

//And exactly how many is that//

Take a wild guess. Half it. Minus 50% of your original guess.
-- MadnessInMyMethod, Jan 11 2009

It would be fun to do it in places where you suspect a hidden camera, thus, making the viewer on the other end think that the cover is blown.
-- Jscotty, Jan 13 2009

So, will this be enforced in some way, or is it participantory optional?
-- quantum_flux, Jan 13 2009

Voluntary participation is obligatory.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 13 2009

I'm determined not to miss this year.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 01 2010

I hope that there is a camera here at halfbake as I plan on mooning you all.

-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 07 2010

ahhhh, gotta go to the mall...
-- FlyingToaster, Jan 08 2010

Yep, I'm thinking the public library must have some nice cams...Yay, I been waiting for the date...I missed it last year.
-- blissmiss, Jan 08 2010

Didn't Mark Thomas do something like this but with the added kicker that he then marched into his Local Council office and made a request under the Freedom of Information Act that they give him a copy of the video?
-- DrBob, Jan 08 2010

There's now a recording somewhere with a brief soft-shoe- shuffle. I hope it gets saved.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 08 2010

Yay! I have seven seconds of tapdance to my credit. Somewhat muffled by the snow outside Kings Cross station, but I guess audio doesn't get recorded anyway. Well done to all.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 08 2010

Should we actually find a security camera or just assume there is one everywhere?
-- rcarty, Jan 08 2010

Yes, I remember the Mark Thomas thing. I'm not sure if he danced though, or just waved & held up placards?
-- pocmloc, Jan 08 2010

//Should we actually find a security camera or just assume there is one everywhere?//

There probably is one everywhere (by the way, your flies are open), but for best effect you should find a particular one, preferably one you can get close enough to to fill the screen.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 08 2010

Would it have been more correct to say there are security cameras everywhere, if in some places there is only one?
-- rcarty, Jan 08 2010

Probably.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 08 2010

At least.
-- rcarty, Jan 08 2010

I think we need proof of the ditty you did. Like a photo of you dancing in front of the camera. ( I say "you" cause I'm really too chicken to do this.)

-- nineteenthly, Jan 09 2010

Bugger - missed it again
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 11 2012

Ditto... can we shift this further into the year a bit ?
-- FlyingToaster, Jan 11 2012

It's already been shifted by a whole year...
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 11 2012

Pants! - is there an email notification available?
-- gnomethang, Jan 12 2012

Yes. If you email me on Jan 7th I'll send you a reminder.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 26 2012

It's coming...
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 01 2015

[+] Isn't that day on the same day as new year's eve?
-- mofosyne, Jan 01 2015

I hope everybody is dusting off their sequinned dresses and tap shoes. I know I am.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 05 2015

I wondered who had taken mine! Do put them back when you have dusted them.
-- pocmloc, Jan 06 2015

I so can't wait for this tomorrow. For once I finally got to it before it was all over. Wheeeee!!!
-- blissmiss, Jan 07 2015

Dancing boots ready...
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 09 2015

Oh shit, I was a day early. Still haven't got it right. Sigh, maybe next year.
-- blissmiss, Jan 09 2015

I seem to miss this one annually...
Can you please post a reminder notice on all security cameras!
-- xandram, Jan 09 2015

I got a very strange look from our security man when I passed him just now.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 09 2015

Made it!
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 09 2015

Excellent! That means there's at least two of us due to be sectioned.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 09 2015

A bit subtle wiggle this year. Next year.
-- wjt, Jan 11 2015

I hope everyone has their dancing shoes ready.

We just smile and wave at the security camera in the Target store elevator, because the kids ride it about a dozen times every shopping trip.
-- RayfordSteele, Jan 04 2017

.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Jan 04 2018

Thanks for the bump! I would have forgotten.

-- DenholmRicshaw, Feb 10 2019

getting in early...
-- DenholmRicshaw, Dec 22 2019

By a bizarre almost-coincidence, yesterday I did a combined tap and soft-shoe routine past the glassy eye of a security camera. Technically, I was falling down a flight of wet stairs, but the result was the same.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Dec 22 2019

You need one of those stair locks.
-- DenholmRicshaw, Dec 23 2019

No, he needs to learn to leave the pub while he can still walk unaided, not when they run out of gin and tonic.
