Vehicle: Recreational Vehicle
Hummer Winnebago   (-1)  [vote for, against]
Soft on the Inside, Crunchy on the outside

With all the frenzy regarding "new vehicle categories" (ref: Subaru Baja), I think manufacturers have missed out on one of the biggest markets: Guys and Gals who love comfort and want to look real cool. Options like rear-mounted gun turret/clothesline, optional camouflage paint scheme, and beverage cooler (american favorite) make this an absolute necessity for anyone shopping for a new vehicle.

Suggestions on other options very welcome (specifically dealing with fuel efficiency)

What are you proposing here? I'm a little slow and need more clarity than you are offering.

Soldier wannabees in a comfy camper.

I figure if you want to play soldier, you have to be prepared to lie in the dirt.
-- FloridaManatee, Apr 30 2003

My take on the idea is that it is a super high mobility camper, i.e. you can take your camper out to places where no Winnebago could ever go. If so, someone baked something like this called the MaxiMog (see link).
-- krelnik, Apr 30 2003

I don't think the MaxiMog's big enough for what mahatma's describing - even if you include the trailer. The trend in the states is larger and larger. I'm picturing something 5x the size of the MaxiMog and includes it's own micro-refinery for draining oil sources found on the journey.

Anyone remember the movie Stripes? The EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle...
-- phoenix, Apr 30 2003

I suppose I'm proposing a "beefed up version" of that which we all would love. When I was a kid, I loved Jeeps, I loved Winnebagos, I love the outdoors, I loved cars, I loved playing in the mud, and I loved my cuddly blanket. This is a natural outcome of those passions.

Sort of like the Supreme Chicken Burrito for most.

MaxiMog is a good start, but creature comforts are falling way short. Bigger (5x is good) to fit bed, living area, shower, storage, TV...

Titan too utilitarian and, like Starr Jones, no need for excessively large Dumper.

EM-50 I nice, but again, I think creature comforts are lacking. ALL in right direction, though.

Basically START with a Winnebago Ultimate freedom (see link) and get as close to a hummer as possible without losing the Kitchen, shower, and bed.

Argh.... I remember driving Unimogs in the army.... the Maximogs are giving me nightmares.... no....

[buddha pest] - I wasn't going to bring it up.. but there IS a tertiary meaning for Hummer, you know...

Please use the link function for URLs. (I did this one for you).

Why has no one mentioend the curtains? It is just wrong to consider a "home sweet home"-style urban assault vehicle that doesn't include curtains as an optional feature.

Back in the day, my siblings and I could tell the difference between our own socioeconomic class and those on the higher rungs, in this one way: our VW Bus had no curtains, and theirs did. If I know Hummer drivers, and I think I do, they will not want to be perceived as sharing the same income tax bracket as my parents, the classroom lifers and parents of six.

P.S.: free croissant to the next poster who manages to provide an appropriately-rated link to the "tertiary meaning for Hummer" ...
-- 1percent, Apr 30 2003

Done and appropriately rated, I should think. ;-)

Applying that 'slideout' technology might have some military benefits. Heck, in Gulf War 2 we had problems with infantry getting cramped into tiny tanks. Perhaps in Gulf War 3 a militarized Winnebago could ride in the center of the convoy, protected and flanked.

There's a French bloke who has built his house on the chassis of a very large drag-line excavator. Not only can it crawl down the road but it can rotate too, providing you disconnect the plumbing.

Croissant granted, bristolz!

'Chi Chi LaRue'? My goodness. Seems I'll have to let my friend Gina know that her top-secret pornstar name has been appropriated ...
-- 1percent, May 02 2003

Croissant. I always viewed the traditional Winnebago camper as ironic because the thing was too flimsy to bring it anywhere camping. My grandparents owned one back in the 80's, and sold it because it was near worthless.

Hummer based Winnie? I think the Acme or Omega of the breed was created for Jacques Tati's film, Trafic (one f). If you're lucky enough to find a copy on video or else, check it out.

Stretch Hummer Limousines are baked.

On a recent trip I had jaw drop the first time I saw a pair. I shouldn't have been so surprised, I was in Los Angeles - the mecca of apparent opulence.
