The amount of heat and stale air which can build up in a car during the summer is surprising. Some holes, approximately the diameter of a can of soup, and covered with flaps under normal conditions, could be opened when parking in the summer. But there would also be small fans fitted into these holes. The hot air goes up and powers the fans, which connect to other fans in the car's interior and which keep the air moving, so as to prevent the large "cloud" of hot, smelly air which you normally encounter when you open a car.-- Saruman, Jun 20 2002 Window roller-upper http://www.halfbake...ndow_20roller-upperShameful - plug - for those holes in your roof. [phoenix, Jun 20 2002, last modified Oct 17 2004] Summertime parked-car fan http://www.halfbake..._20parked-car_20fanAnother solution, albeit baked. [phoenix, Jun 20 2002, last modified Oct 17 2004] Cool idea. It'll keep the inside of the car at 100 instead of 120 in the summer in many cities. I was thinking, maybe at least one of the fans could be directed at the seats to help dry out all the sweat that builds up from the various asses that tread there. Also, those soup can holes have to be designed so that various car-thieving devices can't be inserted into them for non-kosher purposes. Otherwise it gets a pastry.-- polartomato, Jun 20 2002 [polartomato]: I'd love it if I could keep my car's interior temperature any where near 120. That's only a few degrees above ambient temperature around here in the summer.
Back to the idea...If you put such holes in the top of the car, could you just use the chimney effect instead of fans by putting similar vents in the bottom of the car to let in cooler air to replace the hot air that rises out of the top?-- half, Jun 20 2002 You're letting a lot of CO in if you put vents in the floor of your car.-- bookworm, Jun 20 2002 What [half] said. And what happens if it's hot *and* raining?-- phoenix, Jun 20 2002 If its hot and raining you are in the rainforest and have other things to worry about than just hot air in your car-- Saruman, Jun 21 2002 Baked. You can get little solar-powered ventilator fans that you trap in the top of a window, to keep the car ventilated. In the "Innovations" catalog in the UK. Good for being able to leave the dog in the car for short periods when it's sunny.-- 8th of 7, Jun 21 2002 "But it's a dry heat!"-- polartomato, Jun 22 2002 random, halfbakery
