Computer: Searching: Neglected
Google "Yes or No Answers Only" Selection   (+1, -1)  [vote for, against]
When you don't want to waste your time with endless blathering starting with "It depends"

For a buddy of mine who just went through a nasty divorce resulting in endless drama about visitation of his ten year old son, I told him I heard a kid can choose the parent they live with at 13. So I Googled it and oh-my-ghod, the blathering, endless lists of variables, blablablabla BS. I still have no idea what the answer is, and don't care anymore.

The idea is that you select "Yes Or No Answers Only" and in my case, since it knows where I'm Googling from, it says "Yes" (if that's the answer) and then can go on at length after that.

Obviously it there's no yes or no answer you simply get a NONE in the results, but at least you tried.

To be clear, elaboration can follow, even starting with "but" or "if" etc, but this bypasses the unfortunate change of communication style the internet brought.

Newspapers used to make the point and then elaborate with progressively more details as the written article continued. They were monetized by people buying the actual paper, and if the article started with "Very Historical Event At Pearl Harbor Today" where you had to get to paragraph 5 to see what actually happened, nobody would buy the newspaper.

Monetization of internet stuff is by adds, if you just give the info away they don't scroll through the 20 adds with hooks like "The embarassing crotch shot pictures of the this famous actress when she didn't know the cameras were still rolling." so the point is hidden on paragraph god knows where.

Websites can still sell "news" about "the one weight loss candy bar the exercise industry doesn't want you to know about" by putting the ad under the "Yes" or "No", but people could streamline their time a lot.

Also available would be "One Sentence Answers Only". Might even have a slider from "one word" to "one sentence" to "one paragraph" to "whatever".

In cases where there is no yes or no, you might get a quick blurb such as "Assumes fact not in evidence." as appropriate for "Did you stop beating your wife?" or something I came up with, "Affirmation of that specific does not apply to the implied aggregate conclusion." which would apply to questions such as "You say Hitler was a bad guy, but didn't he like dogs and deplore smoking? Yes or no?"

This isn't a joke or a funny. The "Google" police have now got everything I communicate with, and have blocked me from anyone getting this. I know we have smart people here, folks with law experience. You know how to get through to me, I hope someone can. This would be right up your sleeve 2 fries, you know a lot about the Freedom of Speech.

I'll check back later but if anyone in central Il has a place we could meet, I could be on a train to north or south or if necessary somewhere with a beach.
-- blissmiss, Jun 29 2024

I love and miss you all. Most people in this town I know are gone out of country or as far as here as possible. Thank you, doc, I appreciate your time.
-- blissmiss, Jun 29 2024

Blissy, gotta stand your ground. A good meeting place is Marin county. Beaches, art, happy people, beautiful view of San Francisco from far away which is the appropriate way to enjoy it.

Not for me to say but that should be your home I think. I believe you said you lived in that area once so if I got that right you know what I’m saying is true.

If your heart points you in that direction of course. That’s my two cents anyway.
-- doctorremulac3, Jun 29 2024

[bliss] I am not going to be much help from the other side of the world, all I know about America is from what I see on the glowing screen and it is all too crazy to be believeable.

[Doc] I think the deadly problem with your idea is that simple questions don't usually have a simple answer, this is something to with the philosophy or science or whatever. The only way to give a straight up "yes" or "no" answer to any question is either to be a dick, or to bullshit. Neither of which is likely to give a useful answer (though having dickish tendencies myself I tend to think that dicks often actually give the correct answer but they are so irritating that the questioner ignores it). I think the "being a dick" AI has not yet been officially released and so we are stuck with the Bullshitting model which, while at best being ingratiatingly pleasant to interact with, is quite often wrong.

Yes, best to ignore Mr. Google and ask real humans for the answer, and even if they don't know you can still enjoy their company and just do what you want to do without worrying if the algorithm says it is permitted or not.
-- pocmloc, Jun 29 2024

//The only way to give a straight up "yes" or "no" answer to any question is either to be a dick, or to bullshit.//

Is the Sun made mostly of hydrogen? Careful, don't wanna be a dick by saying yes.

Curious, what sane part of the planet do you live on where us nutjobs who invented, oh, just about everything, * can be looked down upon and criticized for our relative lack of sanity?

* By the way, the person who wrote the thesis that stars were mostly composed of hydrogen and helium was born in Britain, but upon realizing how nutty she was, moved the the United States where crazies like here were welcome. By the way, she titled her doctoral thesis: "Not To Be A Dick Or A Bullshitter, But Stars Are Composed of Hydrogen And Helium"
-- doctorremulac3, Jun 29 2024

Part of the problem is that a definitive yes or no answer CAN sometimes require a lot of blanks being filled in. Questions of child custody can vary widely based on location. States set child custody laws, but it's up to individual judges and commissioners as to how they choose to interpret and enforce those laws. Believe me, I'm in a similar situation with my daughter's mother, so I sympathize. But that's not a yes or no question.
-- 21 Quest, Jun 29 2024

Okay, as a Californian, I took a deep breath and wallowed through the blather, boilerplate and legalease.

Question: Can a child chose which parent they live with when they turn 13?

The answer is: No.

They can tell the court that mommy is a vampire which may or may not impact the courts decision regarding custody, but categorically, without question, the answer is unequivocally, unqualifiedly, clearly, unconditionally, plainly...

No.

Now that does't mean they have to stop at no, they just have to say no first. Then they can blather on all they want about how the court might change their mind if the kid tells how their father turns into a warewolf during a full Moon, but only after they answered the question in the requested form.

Not a yes or no question? You'll get: "Assumes facts not in evidence" or "Two many variables to answer yes or no." or "Affirmation of that specific does not apply to the implied aggregate conclusion."
-- doctorremulac3, Jun 29 2024

In California, the relevant age is 14, not 13. What California law says is that AT that age, the court has to grant the child an audience and consider the child's stated preference as PART of the body of evidence and reasoning they use in determining whether or not a change of custody is warranted unless the court can articulate a specific reason why it would not be in the child's best interest to do so. If the child is younger than 14, the court may CHOOSE to allow the child an audience, but doesn't have to.
-- 21 Quest, Jun 30 2024

Well there you go, it would say “No” then say but at 14 that changes.

That so makes my point, a simple no followed by the age they can decide would have been so incredibly superior.
-- doctorremulac3, Jun 30 2024

But it's still not exactly a no, because under the age of 14 the court CAN still grant the same weight of consideration should they so choose.

Oh [miss bliss], we've all been silenced. Freedom of speech was one of the first attacks.

... you are in for some diversity enrichment you've never considered being included in.
Free speech is just a bi-line now. It's on to the next crisis.

Until society decides to stop being rubes, the beatings will continue until morale improves.

What the fuck can I do about it other than inform?

Love you [bliss].
-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Jun 30 2024

Well [doc] I try to look at different sources, but they all seem biased and "anti-American" or confused, which is why I said I don't believe them, which is why I have no reliable info. Complain to the media sources not to me.

As for questions, it is easy enough to frame a question so that it clearly has a simple yes/no answer, if you already know or can guess what the answer is. But check the link to the top 100 questions people ask.
-- pocmloc, Jun 30 2024

Google is a business and they use the flow of information as a system to make money. In this regard they prioritise that which makes them the most money. If you want to access information that is not subject to this capitalist alogorithm of "we'll show you what makes us the most money first" then alternative methods need to be used. Everyone was able to find out anything they wanted pre the internet and pre google, but it was through reading books, newspapers, good television and engaging in conversations. Now an entire generation (esp young people in the West) get most of their information/news from airhead influencers/youtube/tik-tok etc. We live in a dumbed down world. It's one of the reasons why I enjoy making work that has little practical purpose and teach the methods of doing so as an essential skill.
-- xenzag, Jun 30 2024

We're at the dawning of the maturation of the information age. Yes, there are companies that consider controlling information to keep the proles in line essential, but they're living in the past when if you controlled the 3 TV networks and network of local news papers you controlled all citizen discourse. That's not possible now, at least not here in America.

In China, where they've been ruled over by emperors for thousands of years, only recently having their emperor overlords change uniforms to something a bit more prole soothing, they've corralled the internet and it's all government controlled, but in the west, us guys over in crazy land who invented the internet and have a history to telling kings to go fuck themselves, we have just enough freedom advocates that are allowing free speech to be found if it's looked for.

It only takes one lesson about the BS they've been fed for a citizen to learn about controlled propaganda for them to start getting red pill addicted.

Then you have that magic moment when the average working citizen, family man, working mother or student with a useless $100,000 degree in sociopolitical eco-justice says "Hey, if they lied to me about that one thing, does that mean they lie to me about other things as well?"

From then on you have the most dangerous citizen in the eyes of the state. One that's become aware of his debt slave masters, perpetual warmongers, oligarchs and health destruction/repair scam industrialists, mono-party fake political systems and commie scumbag global theft cartels owned by the elite of elites who when asked "How much should we give?" answer only: "More."

And the most dangerous thing they fear? Ask the "money" industrialist cabal, you know, those people who own everything even though they don't do anything but suck the very life out of the citizens they consider their property? What happened when in 2012, you had the citizens who had been trained to hate each other in the divide and conquer protocol suddenly, (although still obediently hating each other) both rise up against the globalist "financial" oligarchs? On the left it was Occupy Wall Street and on the right it was the Tea Party Movement, but both agreed the people were getting turned into slaves. (Left and right being a phony state created dichotomy by the way. "We're not enslaving you! Look over there! Half the country's citizens are pure evil! They're the problem!")

Guess when all the race wars started and the peace accords of the civil rights movement were erased. No longer was a person to be judged by the content of their character, now it was simply to be divided and categorized by the color of your skin. Not the only divide and conquer scam they're running but it's a big one.

In today's globalist anti citizen movement, civil rights activists Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez would be silenced and cancelled.

Let that sink in.

//Oh, and it was Sir Tim Berners-Lee that invented the World Wide Web, that google now thinks it owns. Correct? Yes or No//

Your ignorance is embarrassing. See links for the difference between the internet and the world wide web. DARPA research led to the internet that you're using now. Someone perfecting the cigarette lighter didn't discover fire.

I think the Trump obsession is a handy tool for simpletons to deal with a complicated world. Any questions come up, they just start chanting the Trump mantra and it all goes away.
-- doctorremulac3, Jun 30 2024

It hasn't gone away yet though!

Perhaps we need to chant more and louder?
-- pocmloc, Jul 01 2024

Could be, let's try it.

"Oh great and powerful universe who Donald Trump is the center of and around whom all things flow, we implore you to solve these problems with our chant of "Orangemanbad". Hear our prayers:"

Cult leader: "Feed the hungry!" Cult followers: "Orangemanbad"

Cult leader: "House the homeless!" Cult followers: "Orangemanbad"

Cult leader: "Stop the wars!" Cult followers: "Orangemanbad"

Cult leader: "Stop violence in the streets!" Cult followers: "Orangemanbad"

Cult leader: "Enact a series of protocols that retain freedom of the individual putting their rights paramount above those of the un-elected elites who see this great society as a slave state to be beaten, drained of resources and tortured for their pleasure and financial enhancement and create a logically regulated free market system such that the benefits of the labor and struggles of the people flow to them, not some self appointed, unregulated and unaccountable ruling body that uses violence, terror and never ending wars to hold their grip on society!"

Cult followers: "Huh?"

Cult leader: "Ooops, sorry, wrong note. That's from the bad guys." Cult Followers: "ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD!"

Cult leader: "Yes, very good, exactly, orangemanbad. Back to the prayers. Allow all human resources to flow to me so I can deal with the one and only problem we face in a world that would be perfect otherwise, that one and only problem:

DONALD J TRUMP!!!"

Cult followers: "ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD! ORANGEMANBAD!"

Okay, I've got a good feeling about this. Let's see if it works.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

I never mentioned his name. I could have been describing some other fascist moron who openly expresses admiration of the great dictator. Why did you conclude it was “himself who’s name cannot be used on the Halfbakery by anyone except you”?
-- xenzag, Jul 01 2024

Because you were obviously referring to Trump, a name anybody can openly refer to at any time whenever they're crying out for attention.

And thank you for making my point. I proposed a series of ideas and what was your response? Let's get back to Trump, the answer to everything in your world. Critical independent thinking not allowed, only Trump cult chants.

Did you see the links about the difference between the internet and the world wide web? Yes or No?
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

Okay, I'm kind of feeling like a bully now, I'm not enjoying this. You're beat, stop embarrassing yourself. You're a human being, I need to understand you've obviously got some issues and this is how you deal with them so hey, if it works for you go for it.

But do keep it to yourself, any more Trump cult stuff will get immediately deleted without my even reading it so don't waste your time.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

Back to Earth here, I'm going to add something, analysis of chosen answers. No need to do anything, the search engine determines which answer you liked by how long you spent on it, then evaluates why. And best of all, it's got a ranking of how well you liked the answer you can put in manually. I'd say a 1 to 5 would be adequate.

Then those answers that piss me off, like "Is the Moon made of green cheese?" that start with anything other than "NO" could be pushed down in the search results algorithm.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

Oh, you’re absolutely right, having answers be ranked by general votes world be a disaster. This would be specific to that user only, and importantly, format only is customized, not content.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

Okay, xenzag? Nobody give a shit about your Trump obsession. It’s not interesting, it’s not funny and as I said, I’ll erase anything you post droning on about him. I erased that last projectile vomit of a post and will continue do so, so you really need to stop posting about your obsession on anything I write here.

We’re getting to the point where I’m going to start erasing your non Trump posts as well.

Stop.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 01 2024

My sister wants me to call or write. I have close to ten times since Friday. They are deleted immediately and her only response is to say "why are you saying "no". That's because it isn't me.

Yes he has, and I erased that last one where he fantasized about having me permanently removed from the Halfbakery. Don't get more anti free speech fascist than that, wanting somebody permanently silenced and removed from a free speech forum.

Xenzag, you've driven lots of people away from this formerly fun and friendly site and turned it into the Hatebakery it is now, but you won't drive me away. I'm not going anywhere.

You're free to post your hate and bile anywhere else on this site but not on my posts. If you want to post ABOUT THE INVENTION I've posted you're free to do so, but abusive and hate filled political rants will not be tolerated.

And if you're going to try to be me permanently banned from this site I've been a major poster on for the past 20+ years, guess we know who the anti-free speech fascist is here don't we?
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 02 2024

I'm going to re-post what I hoped would spawn an interesting conversation about this age of information we're entering into before the whole post got hijacked with completely unrelated hate mongering cult nonsense specifically designed to keep the people separated and not talking about specific issues.

REPOST OF COMMUNICATION THAT GOT HIJACKED AND QUASHED:

We're at the dawning of the maturation of the information age. Yes, there are companies that consider controlling information to keep the proles in line essential, but they're living in the past when if you controlled the 3 TV networks and network of local news papers you controlled all citizen discourse. In today's globalist anti citizen movement, civil rights activists Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez would be silenced and cancelled.

END OF POST

Now right or wrong, that's the kind of discourse we should be having here. Am I wrong? Great, let me know. I love being pointed in the right direction when I'm pointed in the wrong direction, that's what human communication is for! To be clear, that's just what I think, but if you disagree, let me know what you think. Let's bring the HB back to what it once was.

And xenzag, I INVITE you to make an intelligent comment on this post without resorting to your completely un-related hive-mind cult, hate blather chanting designed specifically to stop discourse about the issues we face so we'll be good compliant little serfs bowing to our self decreed masters. We've moved way beyond kings saying "Bow down an swear allegiance to me because I have a sparky hat!" They don't even bother with the sparkly hat anymore. At least they used to have entertaining distractions like crowns, scepters, and garishly decorated thrones and carriages, now they don't even need to bother with that.

So go ahead xenzag, I don't believe you can. Don't have to agree, on the contrary, as a free speech advocate, I WANT to hear other views, but I won't have the subject quashed with unrelated fascist propaganda designed specifically to separate us and keep the people from communicating about specific issues. That's one of the elite's main tools for control of the masses. Someone looks like they're getting enlightened? Start screaming about Trump and kill the conversation.

So the above post, your thoughts. Go.
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 02 2024

That's what I though. There's nothing there, is there?
-- doctorremulac3, Jul 02 2024
